Before you start throwing things at me, hear me out...

Prior to 2004, the lament of all Cubs fans over the near century long drought in World Series Titles was always met with "well, the Red Sox and White Sox haven't won forever either."

The Red Sox took care of that last year.

We should cheer for the White Sox to do it this year.

Then, going into 2006, the Cubs will stand alone in their extended period of suckiness. There will be no more excuses, no more rationalizing. Their biggest competitor in their own market will be parading in the streets having snapped their own 90 year skid. No team pre-expansion will be without a Trophy since the Cubs last won.

So, to make sure that the embarassment is solely on the Cubs' shoulders, I say go White Sox!

So let's root for our rivals so that we look really bad instead of bad?

yes. complacency has to end.

and i don't consider the Sox our rivals. The Cardinals are our rivals.

Only if they make it to the World Series and are playing the Cardinals.

I actually agree with Derwood. He's exactly right that fans would say "Well, the Red Sox and White Sox haven't won in forever, either."

If the White Sox win, you take away yet another excuse for complacency and crappiness. Maybe the White Sox parading the World Series trophy through the streets of downtown Chicago would be the kick in the ass this franchise needs.

Who thinks this way? I think you're giving this mindset much much much more weight than it actually has.

Perhaps. And perhaps the 3 million+ attendance every year will forever act as a roadblock to proactive management, but if the Cubs have no one to share in their misery....

Plus, all the stupid "curse talk" holds less weight than ever. No more Curse of the Bambino, no more Curse of the Black Sox.

Someone doesn't have to see White Sox fans on a regular basis....

No kidding.

Having once lived on the south side, I don't just say no, but hell no.

No way could I force myself to even consider rooting for the Sox. I just can't physically or mentally do it. Impossible.

I lived in Chicago for 13 years before moving here 6 months ago.

I just find that hating on other teams is more of a Sox fan thing to do...

It would be nice if Red Sox fans would get shutup. I'm rooting for the WSox, at least over Boston, St Louis, and the Yankees.

But are Red Sox fans acting any differently than we Cub fans will when we win the World Series? I don't blame their fans for acting cocky. But I can't stand Cardinal fans who act like their entitled to a world championship.

I disagree. Should the White Sox win, fans aren't going to stop going to Cubs games, buying Cubs gear, watching Cubs games. Why would they? Wrigley's still there, the team is still on nationally, and they will now be the only lovable losers who haven't won in over 80 years. The money will continue to come in, and the Cubs will continue to generate a solid amount of revenue for the powers that be.

If anything, we should root against the White Sox for this reason - I'm sure everybody here knows Sox fans who will never let them go a day without reminding them that the Sox won in 2005, and the Cubs haven't won since 1908. That's grief we could all do without.

But do you think it could snowball?

Cubs fans grow tired of Sox fans and thier incessant gloating, put more pressure on the franchise to field a winner.

The White Sox are a classless organization, as has been discussed in other threads. I can never bring myself to root for them under any circumstances. I'd pull for the Yankees over them in the AL (as painful as that is to say). If its White Sox-Cards, I will disavow baseball for the duration of the World Series and then try to block the result out of my mind.

You know that feeling of misery you get when you think about the Cubs futility?

It would TRIPLE if the Sox won the World Series.

But I dunno, I am kinda getting used to massive misery after this year. It might just feel like another slap in the face.

It wouldn't stop me from proudly wearing my Cubs hat through the city the day after the Sox won it though

See my post in the latest Sox game thread - really, after a Sox title, what else could happen? That would complete my list of Cub calamities.

The Cubs have been rotten for a long time, but I think the last three years have been especially difficult.

I agree in so much as that 3 years of "competitiveness" but failure has been harder than losing 95 and not ever really having any hope.

Yeah. That, and the simultaneous success of our biggest rivals.

And the complacency when it comes to doing anything about it. A pretty soft $100 million payroll matched with record attendance numbers means no urgency to improve. God how I wish Mark Cuban would buy this team.
