While flipping channels, I saw three Corey ABs today. (Inexplicably, he was again inserted to leadoff the game.) Anyway, in each of the ABs, Corey saw only one pitch.

And, Macias lined out to end the game with the tying runs in scoring position.

Goodbye, Cub 2005 baseball season.

Good riddance.

I think we should move this thread into rants and everyone sort of let out all their anger and emotion (while keeping it as clean as possible) to cleanse themselves from this pathetic season.

Meh, he season was over a month and a half ago, for me.

What I find ridiculous is that the Astros took the wildcard with almost no offense, and a pathetic start to the season. I mean they have Berkman, and Ensberg had a great year. But the offense is similar to the Cubs, in that their OBP isn't all that great. IF WE COULD EVER GET A YEAR where everyone stays healthy, we should do no worse than second in the division. But instead, we finish behind the Brewers. This offseason will really test Hendry, because the Brewers are just going to get better, as will the Pirates and Reds, and our window is slowly closing. Sorry, ranting, but man, what a sad sad season.

I just don't understand Dusty's move of letting Maddux hit for himself with Oswalt in trouble and runners on 2nd & 3rd in the 6th inning. It was obvious that Maddux didn't have his best stuff and he was in a position to get the win. Instead, Maddux makes the third out, Maddux loses the lead in the 6th inning, Oswalt gets his 20th win, and the Astros win the WC.

Other "in a nutshell" moments from today's game:

- Dusty leaving Maddux in to hit with runners in scoring position, only to take him out the next inning after he has surrendered the lead

- Maddux bunting into a DP with runners on 1st and 3rd and one out, runner on third fails to score on the play (although uncharacteristically scores on a clutch RBI double by Patterson that should have plated 2 runs)

- Error by Neifi effectively giving the game to the Astros

- Macias, 0-5, batting in the two hole

- Neifi getting thrown out at the plate

- Lee left on deck as Macias makes the final out

Three words: Clemens, Pettite, Oswalt.

Just like the 2003 Cubs. God, we were so close.

Everyone in the park knew that was a fool's move. It happened again and again this season, yet Hendry seems completely happy with letting it happen all over again next year.

I hope that was the last time I will ever see Macias in a Cubs jersey.

I hope that was the last time I ever saw Corey Patterson in a Cubs jersey.

I hear ya man, but I'm also mixed. I've put so much fan energy (? I GUESS I'll call it that) into pulling for Patterson, so I want him to succeed. But geez, some of those pitches he was swinging at were so bad! He's not even close anymore. Heck, even the Astros announcers were making fun of how Oswalt couldn't strike him out!

Two numbers tell you everything you need to know about this team.

Those are the number of games Perez and Macias played in. Only Burnitz and Lee played in more games than Perez. Macias played in more games than Walker.

Matt Murton only appeared in 50 games despite being called up before the all-star break. Todd Hollandsworth played in more games as a Cub than Murton did.

I hate you Dusty. I really, really do. I've never wanted a Cubs season to end as much as I wanted this one to finish. You've single-handedly sucked any enjoyment out of watching the team I've followed since I was a child.

I was actually hoping you'd blow this series because you don't deserve to claim a "winning" season this year. You're a buffoon and a disgrace to the uniform. And that's saying something considering the collection of clowns this team has employed over the years. You make Don Baylor look like Casey Stengel.

Now we get to sit and listen to Joe Buck and Thom Brenneman drool over the White Sox and Cardinals for the next month.

Thank you Dusty, thank you very much. Take your bong and go back to San Francisco.

Good post, would you mind if I showed this to someone and quoted you?

I don't understand the bong thing?

I joined the game late and Neifi was batting and then the next person up was Maddux and I said to myself " Self - I cannot believe Neifi is in the 8 hole! My god Dusty finally figured it out on the last game of the season". I didn't know whether to be mad or happy that it took him this long to figure it out. Then the top of the order came up with Corey and Macias

I also imagined the Phils in their clubhouse watching the game and I felt their exitement as the winning run came to the plate and their sadness as they realized that all their hope was pinned to Corey Patterson Jose Macias.

A couple times this week I kind of felt OK that the Cub's were out of it as I watched the Indians and the Phils chances fade - I am still not ready to watch a choke job again like we did last year.

Here's my theory:

Because the Cubs have been essentially out of it since they split that July series against the Reds (which preceded one of the most ungodly offensive slumps we saw this season), most of the Cub fans out there basically lost all interest in the team and aren't even bothering investing in this team emotionally. Even though the Cubs weren't out of it officially out of it until not too long ago, everyone had just given up.

Because of that, no one is really angry like they were earlier in the season. You notice that? Threads dedicated to bashing Dusty, Corey, Neifi, and basically everyone else have declined greatly around here. Even the less hardcore Cub fans I know don't even care any more. Due to this, there won't be much anger coming into the offseason.

If the Cubs had basically repeated last season, where they were either leading the WC or in contention until the last week of the season, I think things would be vastly different right now. People would be actively calling for the heads of Dusty, Hendry, and various other people much more vociferously.

If that had happened, there would have been a much more likely possibility of Dusty getting the axe.

Instead, we'll be stuck with him to start next season. Yay.

Unless Hendry pulls a huge rabbit out of his hat and acquires difference-makers that even Dusty can't screw up, I'm not going to invest much emotionally or financially in this team next year.

I've had it.

Well, maybe if Walker and Nomar could have stayed healthy these guys wouldn't have played nearly as much. Hopefully, all 4 aren't back.
