It may be a little early to discuss this but what kind of season does everyone think Kerry needs to have in order for the Cubs to pick up his option?

Obviously, requirement number one would be for him to start just about every game without any health concerns whatsoever. I think as long as he is used as a starter and stays healthy the entire year they will most likely pick up his option and I think for Kerry to not pick it up would require a very awesome Cy Young type year which is fairly unlikely to happen.

i thought he had to pitch 400+ innings for that to vest (05 and 06). :?

that's pretty much impossible.

With the way Dusty handles the pitching staff, I wouldn't say its out of the question for Woody to hit 300 IP next year.

I'm not certain, but I do believe the Cubs could pick up the option even it doesn't vest on IP.

Unless Kerry stays healthy for roughly the entire season and puts up a sub 3.50 ERA, I seriously doubt the Cubs touch that option.

I thought there was a mutual option that would automatically vest if 400 innings were reached.

Wood's going to need to make every start and average 10 innings a start in order to vest it. If either the Cubs or Wood decline the option, he becomes a FA.

here's an article with the details:

Wood will receive $7 million in 2004, $8.5 million in 2005 and $11 million in 2006 plus a $3 million signing bonus. The fourth year has three scenarios. There is a club option for $13.5 million with a $3 million buyout. If Wood totals 400 innings in 2005-06, he could opt for a vesting option for 2007. Or, if he doesn't reach the innings figure and the Cubs decide not to honor the option, Wood could file for free agency.

13.5 million is a lot of cash. I really don't see the Cubs picking that up unless Wood has a stellar season in 2006.

Wouldnt suprise me that Kerry has a Pavano type season, he fits the mold pretty well, and it would be all the better for us if we expect to be playoff bound this year. food for thought, he might hit his peak in trade value if the above happens, and might bring in a good crop of prospects.

Even if he does have an amazing season next year, I don't see the cubs picking up the option. He's damaged goods, and can't be getting any healthier. And if we aren't a contender by mid-season, I'd expect to see him traded.

If Kerry is healthy enough to make all his starts next year, he will have a good season. He's too good of a pitcher not too. Still, I don't think the Cubs pickup the option. I think best case scenario is Wood starts 28-30 games, has a good-to-great season, and the deal gets restructured (extension lowering the base of 07). Deep down, I don't think that either the Cubs or Kerry want to part ways.

i hope they put him in the pen to set up dempster next year. i dont think his shoulder can take starting anymore & he would be very effective for 1-2 innings.

At this point, Kerry is not a good pitcher. He is grossly overpaid and let's hope that 2006 is his last year in a Cubs uniform. My hope is that some team next year will be stupid enough to take him off our hands.

Yes, he's overpaid because he hasn't been on the mound enough. But you can't say that he's not a good pitcher when he's there. His highest ERA season since 2000 was 3.72 last year, and he was absolutely destroying the league before he got injured last year.

I agree with you. I'm curious if Wood struggles with injuries in 2006, what kind of deal the Cubs would offer him.

It is possible the Wood might want a new start somewhere else if he is injured again. I really wouldn't blame him if he decided to go back to Texas as a free agent after the 2006 season. If it were me that's what I'd do. It just seems like things might not work out being in Chicago and fresh start physically and mentally may be the right thing to do.

i'm wondering what you mean by this. kerry is definitely a very good pitcher. he may be a chronically injured pitcher, but you cannot say he isn't very good. if he throws 200 innings, he'll have a good year.
