For the second year in a row, St. Louis, having already clinched the division and home field, has been swept by a Houston team battling for a Wild Card during the last week of the season. I think both times were in St. Louis too.

This is good because if Houston wins the WC we will get to play the Padres in the first round.

I really don't like the way we are limping into the playoffs though. The only positives of late are that Matt Morris has pitched very well his past two starts and that Reggie went nuts tonight.

Chicago lays down -- again

For the second straight year, the Chicago Cubs failed to even make it an interesting pennant race...

Neifi, Macias, Rusch & Co. owed it to the league though, to try their darndest, and I think they did.

Yes they did. Injuries hit again and the bench did the best they could.

I just get torked up when people start talking about the Cards laying down at the end of the year.

I agree that this is a pretty ridiculous thread. Especially considering that the Cubs have no part in it. Let STL do what they want, if they want to lose so they get SD in the first round, let them.

torqued up - excited, antsy, hyper

Just like I do before the Dawgs get thumped in the 1AA playoffs ;)

They're ranked 2nd in the country!

And you should know that us SIU grads don't spell so good sometimes...

Nah, the Dawgs layed down uh, well, maybe not.

Doent cell yorecelf shoret wit yer spellin' (er fer yer cipherin' neether).

Dawgs don't deserve the #2 ranking yet. This weekend v. MSU (That's Missouri State, not Michigan) should be a good game, and perhaps a stiff test.

I think we have more to worry about than laying down for Houston with our two best players seemingly hitting a wall. Pujols is in a slump and Carp looks to be merely mortal. Cards went 2-5 the last week of the season last year too. It's certainly not LaRussa's fault, the last two games he's sported two of our best lineups. I think they were trying like heck to get Carp to 22 wins.

I don't think Carp looks mortal, I think he looks terrible. 5.40 ERA in September, 800+ OPS against. He didn't make it to last postseason did he? A lot of people couldn't explain his greatness mid season, perhaps things are just balancing out, like with the White Sox.

I don't have a negative thing to say about them "laying down" at the end. I could care less. They locked up the division early and can treat September however they want.

However, there has to be major concern out there. Mulder's up and down season continues, Morris is on his 4th month of 4+ ERA. Suppan has been the best post All Star pitcher.

Sometimes this late season stuff is overblown, as for how it applies to the postseason. Sometime it's underplayed though. Anybody who is handing the crown to STL isn't watching their pitching, which is the part of the game I'd least like to see struggle heading into the playoffs.

But all in all, I'd switch places in a heartbeat, even Eddy Curry's.

The worst part of it is it's too late to do anything about it, rest or otherwise. IMO Carp is a low key guy and he's let this CY stuff get into his head. He showed the most emotion on the mound than I've ever seen him display after Berkman's two run shot. I'd have to bet on Pujols finding his stroke given his consistent history, at least more so than others.

Other than that, it is anyone's guess as to which Cards team will show up, pitching wise or offensively.

It'll always be SWMS to me ;)

Me too. Well, SMS, but you get the point. Man that pissed me off when they stole our name like that.

1. The Astros are playing these games under a "must-win" situation.

2. The Cardinals are playing these games under a "must-we-play-these" situation.

3. Although Carpenter is making me nervous, it's true that he's not going to show the Astros his best stuff shortly before the Cards might play them in the post-season.

4. Anyone who thinks Tony La Russa, a man who wouldn't back off a checkers match with his 3-year old daughter, would "lay down" for another MLB team loses credibility.

5. The Cardinals can't afford any more injuries. Even Larry Walker admitted to being hesitant to dive for a ball right now.

6. The 2004 Cardinals were 2-5 the last 7 games of the regular season....and went on to the World Series.

7. The 2000 Yankees were 0-7 the last 7 games of the regular season....and went on to win the World Series.

8. Although as a Cardinal fan, it sucks to watch my favorite team get swept at home, I refuse to panic.

He's had 5 starts against Houston thie year I believe, going 4-0 with an ERA under 1. Somehow, they'll remember him when he di well against them. You never forget when a pitcher does well or poorly against you. any film session will remind how well he did against them.

Baseball isn't about memory anymore, you have hours of film from different angles on each pitcher.

You guys shouldn't let threads like this bother you. It's mearly envious shots at your ballclub. You have a postseason to worry about

This is what happens when you have 6 weeks of wondering who you're going to play in Oct. I'm not saying that I want it to come down to the last weekend, but it does leave us fans a lot of spare time to knash our teeth.

I also agree that Carp was holding nothing back. He wanted win #22 and he wanted the CY. It's all on Carp, no excuses, and against the omnipotent Houston offense no less.
