I found this article in the Sun Times witha short list of possible offseason acquisitions.

In summary here are some of the names listed:

1. Furcal

2. Nomar

3. Marcus Giles

4. Alex Gonzalez (Marlins)

5. Soriano

6. Milton Bradley

7. Johnny Damon

8. Kenny Lofton

9. Brian Giles

10. Aubrey Huff

11. Cliff Floyd

There are others as well. This was the one that got my attention the most.

MARCUS GILES, Braves second baseman

He's eligible for arbitration and has had a rocky relationship with the Braves' front office. He probably will earn $3.5 million next season. Insiders say there is a 50-50 chance he will be traded. Could be had for Todd Walker and Corey Patterson.

As much as I like Walker, I think I'd do that deal if the Braves were willing to make that switch. Giles's 294/367/457 line would look nice with the Cubs. He's 27 yrs old and would fit well within the nucleus we've established.

I'm all for keeping Walker, but if Walker + Patterson nets Giles, then let's make a deal.

I would definately be for that deal but i think it would take another pitching prospect for the braves to go for it. I really would like Giles to get his OBP back to where it was a couple of years ago near .400, and i think he would be capable of that if he had a patient hitter like murton hitting right behind him. Also food for though, would marcus's presence here help at all in pursuit of the other giles brother?

Why would Atlanta want Patterson? I'd do that deal too, but I really doubt Atlanta would.

Those are my feelings too. What's also interesting is that he indicates the Braves want to bring Furcal back.

While I expect the Braves to make him an offer, my feelings were they were prepared to let Furcal walk. I'm really curious as to where he's getting his information.

Pretty interesting. Would be sweet to get M. Giles, which could make B. Giles less expensive, as he'd come to Chicago w/ a discount. Probably a 1-100 shot though. I guess Atl could put Patterson in rf. He'd probably hit like crazy w/ Atlanta. Or they could take Murton.

Would gladly take this lineup next year.... Lofton, Giles, Giles, Lee, Floyd, ARam, Cedeno & Blanco.

Barrett for Floyd

we can outspend Atlanta for Furcal, but should we?

both Giles (the IF and the OFer) are intriguing. I'd take either one or both, please.

Of course that will never happen. Baker is too stupid to value OBP, so we'll never sniff either. Furcal really isn't that great. There's a reason Atlanta is willing to let him walk. He's not a must have player.

CPatt and Walker for Giles? Where do I sign? Heck, I would even throw in a decent pitching prospect like Nolasco to make it happen. I mean, if that happen, I wonder how much would that play in Brian Giles mind? The FIRST REAL chance to play with you brother at the major league level, would have to be tempting?

I can't for the life of me think of one reason why I'd trade Barrett for Floyd...not one at all.

Only way Scheurholz trades Giles for Patterson and Walker is if he's replaced by the evil, moustachioed twin from the other dimension.

In other words, that won't happen.

Unless the Braves figured out what is wrong with CPatt.

Could we throw in Andy Pratt ??

I have several sources close to the Braves and every last one of them says Furcal is gone. The Braves have Andy Marte ready to go at 3B and they'll move Betemit to SS. The only way they keep Furcal, I'm told, is if they find a taker for Chipper Jones. that would allow them to move Marte to LF.

Would Chipper really be that difficult to move?

I was thinking Micah Bowie

I wonder what Mazzone could do with Mitre.

I'm a big Walker supporter; it's not very easy to find that productive a LH bat from the 2nd base position. But I'd love to get Giles instead.

I'd be pretty happy if the Cubs got Chipper for LF and Giles for 2B.

Yikes. Where would that package start? Mitre, Hill, Marshall, Walker, Harvey...

The Cubs will be in good shape if they can get a couple guys on that list. Hopefully that's just a random order, because I hope Alex Gonzalez isn't the 4th name on their list.

Any combination on that list including the name "Giles" would work for me. I'd even accept Gonzalez if it meant they got 2 others on that list.

Two established MLers who are amongst the best hitters at their positions (including a former MVP and likely Hall of Famer), though one has had recent injury issues and is aging (33).

Jones:

Jones has a .407 OBP this year, career of over .400. That's pretty darn sweet if you ask me.

Giles:

To me, Giles is the no-brainer part of this deal. You pause at Jones b/c of his age and injuries combined his salary.

I dunno. Its very tempting. If I knew Jones were going to be healthy, I'd part with almost anyone in our minor leagues.

I didn't see how much longer Chippers contract is for? I'd rather have C.Beltran if this contract is anything longer than 3 years.

Guaranteed in '06, then a team option for '07. If the option is picked up(it shouldn't be), then the same option appears for '08.

Thank you. I'd be wary dealing with the Braves if I were Hendry.

I think I'd take the risk even if I didn't know. Heck, you could add Murton to that trade if you could sign BGiles (which you could afford). That lineup would potentially be top 3 in the NL. I'd run the risk of Chipper making it through the year just for the chance of great success. Even though I don't want him rushed, I'd settle for Pie in CF, as long as they aren't counting on him as a catalyst at the top of the order. Cedeno and Pie in the lineup offsets the costs of Giles, Giles, Lee, Jones, and Ramirez.
