The thing is, veterans are probably more important in football, since they actually have to play together and learn schemes. There is very little in baseball that requires a veteran player. So, if Lovie can play a more skilled young player, why the heck can't dusty?

"He's a guy who's gotten better," Baker said. "I remember my old general manager Al Campanis telling me that a player doesn't reach his peak until he's somewhere between 32 or 36 [years old] and beyond, and it depends on how his legs are and his desire and if he keeps his weight down and his waistline down. I don't see D-Lee having any problem with that.

"You're playing against guys who are younger than you, so you can set them up," Baker said. "You get to a certain point in your career and you almost know what's coming. You learn to trust your feelings. Hank Aaron told me you don't become a great player until you learn to trust your feelings."

I'm not too critical on Baker's quotes, but these were pretty bad, despite the fact he's quoting someone else in the 1st bolded one.

Counterpoint: Lovie Smith:

"It's important to play the best player, period," Smith said. "No more than that. Early in the year sometimes you have to work through a few things to find out exactly who the best player is, but I've never had a problem playing younger players. You would like to have your best players be veterans, but it doesn't always work out that way."

Maybe Lovie should go back to Gilligans Island because the Baker way is the right way. Until the GM releases the veteran they get major playing time no matter how bad they are. He's reached the 500 level many times and can prove it's the right way.

the "right way" is 6.0 GB of the wild card right now.

Well...the Cubs would be 50 games back if it was done any other way.

and that statement is backed by... :?

Those quotes are down right frightening.

Lovie Smith is the Anti-Dusty. Playing the best players regardless of experience.....what a novel concept.

Dusty wrote the novel on playing veterans all the time.

That means Sammy Sosa is coming into his "prime" with Baltimore.

From our pal Bruce Miles:

http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs.asp?id=94432

Manager Dusty Baker said he was well aware of Murton’s exploits in helping the Cubs win.

“I’ve been having my eyes open on Murton,” said Baker, who has been accused of not liking young players. “I just don’t brag right away or jump on bandwagons. That’s just how I am.

I've never used this emoticon becuase frankly I hate it but this surely calls for it

All this tells me is that Baker has master the art of "self-preservation." He knows there is HEAT surrounding him, and that the Chicago Cubs fans, and perhaps some of the media wants him fired, so he is saying that he has liked Murton, to try and win some brownie points, with the Cubs organization. This self-preservation act of his has driven my nutty.

Wow, I didn't think I'd read anything from him that would actually change my opinion, but this is worse than I thought.

I wonder if Campanis also told Baker that young players lack the "necessities" to succeed.

That's right.....wasn't Campanis starting to lose his mind when Baker was there? That's advice I'd put to use.

Yet more Baker stupidty, in response to the Cardinals successful execution of a Suicide Squeeze, from today's online Tribune:

"They have the personnel to do it," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "And they do it against guys who throw strikes. It's one of their things."

What kind of personnel would that be Dusty? Baseball players?

I was hoping someone would post this.

Like I said before, I hate the man and what he's done to my team.

I found this on the Giants ESPN message board, just thought it was 'funny'.

Quick question, would any of you , seriously, ever want Bochy as your manager?----

I feel your pain. We had Baker here don't forget. His teams were loaded and still couldn't win. And he is gonna get run from Chicago for under achieving as well. I think Bochy is a pretty solid manager but you obviously know more about him watchinghim every day.

Fans of every team hate their manager. I've seen a number of ATL fans complain that Cox "isn't able to win the big games".

But you can't really think that a higher percentage of Braves fans dislike Cox than the percentage of Cubs/Giants fans who dislike Baker.

I agree with your assumed point that every team has its upset fans, but my point is, is that the percetages differ.

Building on this, the Bears are the anti-Cubs. How many players stepped up and took responsibility for their two losses and not doing EVERYTHING they could to help the team win?

Heck, I remember reading Mike Brown claim the defense let the team down after not allowing a TD and losing 9-7.
