I, for one, did not think Rick Ankiel had a chance as a hitter, but sure enough, he's turned into a legit hitting prospect. Here's a note from Yahoo! Fantasy Sports:

The starting pitcher turned outfielder closed the season Sunday with a two-homer game for Double-A Springfield. In his final 28 games at that level, Ankiel hit 10 homers and drove in 28 runs. For the season at two levels, he hit 21 homers and drove in 75 runs in 85 games. He's still a longshot to make a big league roster as a position player, but those are impressive numbers for what amounts to a first-year player.

Who knew?

If he pulls off becoming a starter for a major league team, for any period of time, it will be one of the more amazing feats of athletecism in baseball in quite a while.

He hit .243/.295/.515 as a 26-year-old at AA. It would be an amazing story, but it's a stretch to call him a legit hitting prospect.

A poor man's Kevin Roberson?

Kevin Roberson was a poor man's Kevin Roberson.

In his defense he started off like 1-for 20. The was sent down to A. Once he got called back up he hit around .280. I still dont think he will ever make it , but those numbers are a little skewed from his first stint where he was getting used to hitting and playing everyday for the first time in a long time.

Kevin Roberson was a poor man's Kevin Roberson.

He had a long swing that could generate power, just had a huge strike zone and nothing worthwhile defensively.

Would he be RULE 5?

I think he might be if the Cards don't put him on their 40 man roster. They should. What he's done this season in the minors he has pretty much done on raw talent. If he could hit for better average and improve his defense within the next couple of years he could make it to the majors in time to contribute.

Steve Nebraska was no Johnny Utah.

Shane Falco couldn't hold a candle to John Constantine.

If Ankiel is put on the 40 man roster again this winter to protect him from the rule 5, then he'll have to stick on the Cards roster next spring or pass through waivers again after spring training.
