I say we dont trade Nomar and be hopeful somebody signs him so we can get a #1 pick in the draft.

I doubt that will happen. The Elias Sports bureau rankings determining FA compensation are generated from a players previous two year stat. average in relation to his peers at the position. Nomar hasn't done the Cubs any favors with his performance at the plate thus far this season.....I doubt he'll rate as a Type A FA.

Tedward, any guess where Lawton will end up? The Cubs would not have offered him arbitration as no one would have likely signed him before mid-December, but with a weak FA OF class, could he sneak into the type A?

I like this trade obviously b/c the Cubs gave nothing up as well as hopefully getting some ABs for Murton, but I like the potential of Blackford. Hopefully, he has the makeup that allowed Lerew to develop from a thrower with a strong arm to a pitcher with a strong arm. So far, I have no complaints about the arms the Cubs have rec'd lately. As far as Burrows, that should be interesting, Marmol is the most obvious example of when that works out for the Cubs. But, Burrows is a smaller guy with a big arm, hopefully he can show he can spin a breaking ball.

Do you know what velocity the two guys normally sit at?

Don't know, but everything I seen so far on Blackford is that he is a raw power arm.

As far as Burrows, he was voted as having the strongest OF arm in the SAL after '03 and while he was an OF'er probably the strongest in the Braves system, stronger than Francouer's.

UK,

No clue on where Lawton will end up. Your're right about his stats though. It's a typical Matt Lawton type of season, but that might be good enough to land him in the A class, certainly a B, I would think. It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do with him (if anything) with Bernie leaving. Protection is case Matsui leaves? Highly doubt he will, but anythings possible, I guess.

Dierker looks good in that Cub hat BTW.

I thought the same thing about Clemment!

With Hollandsworthless gone, no Lawton, and youngsters filling up the clubhouse, is there now the realistic possibility that Dusty will leave Left Field empty during the games and play a two-man outfield? Why "ruin the young guys' careers" by playing them in Sept?

We just might see 8 guys on the field the rest of the way folks. :)

Not a surprise that we get more pitching prospects. I wonder, if we will ever pick up a catching prospect or develop one that can play at the major league level.

We'll most likely see Hairston in LF, Corey in CF, and Burnitz in RF.

Well, there goes that idea. Damn.

The Cubs sure do seem to have a lot of them. I thought the idea was to trade for postion players with all this young pitching since the Cubs don't prefer to draft them.

You bring up a good point. All those pitching prospects we brought up this year havent done squat. It also doesnt seem like we have a power OF ready to come up for us. I think Harvey might be our only power OFer we have and hes not even close to ready.

Anyone know if Nomar cleared? If he is not in the Cubs' future plans and since Neifi did not clear, then Nomar should go either via trade or DFAing to give guys like Cedeno and McClain playing time.

I wonder what kind of haul the Cubs could get for Nomar? Would Nomar still be considered a Type A free agent if the Cubs do offer him arb? I don't the Cubs would but I was wondering.

I heard on either the Score or ESPN that Nomar was not put through waivers.

Really? That would make me think that Hendry would either want him back or thought the injury would last longer or be too bad to trade. Can the Cubs still put him on waivers since tomorrow is the deadline?

Ohman & Novoa beg to differ. Not to mention Wuertz before he got overworked.

I'll give you Ohman but Novoa has been up and down and he came from the Tigers. Wuertz, it's probably overwork but he is not pitching too well right now. I can't believe I forgot about Ohman. I think he's a good pitcher.

Yeeee Ah. Holla gone! Some people brought up that Dusty will use Hairston in LF and i see that happening. But if i happens too much i will be totally pissed at Dusty's hypocracy. Earlier in the year Hairston brought up that he could play LF but Dusty said something like he hasnt done it before he wont learn overnight. Ill go ape if he plays 5 days a week in LF and not Murton.

All this means is more Hairston in LF (or Macias).

I don't count on Murton getting any more PT because of this. Baker would stick Nomar out in LF 4 days a week if it meant keeping veterans in the lineup.

Riiiiiiiight.

Wow, what a thread. Hendry actually manages to get not one but two still breathing human beings in exchange for Todd Hollandsworth and much of the reaction in this thread is filled with venom.

I don't feel venomous at all when I think of this move, but I do think the guys we got aren't worth wasting bandwith to analyze their "talents". The Braves know their business, and these guys were practically given away. If they ever make it to the majors this will be a fleecing of the highest order.

I agree. I never said that you specifically did, though.

Hopefully the power Pie displayed in the first half will carry over for a full season. Sing is also a power hitter and his future (with the Cubs) would be as an OF.

Did I misread his 30:22 K:BB ratio in 60 IPs? That doesn't sound like a prospect to me.

Yeah, but are they ready to come up any time soon? Still that leaves only 3 power hitting players. I dont know that just doesnt sound like too many players with power for an entire organization.

Pie

Sing

Harvey

Dopirak

All have very good to great power. That's about one prospect per level, which isn't bad at all.

Players or OFs? Because I'd add Dope and Moore if you're counting just players.

I think Sing is ready for the big leagues, the Cubs seem to think Pie is ready with all the talk of promoting him pre-injury (though I disagree on Pie's readiness). Either way, both Sing and Pie are at AA and less than a year away from the big leagues.
