Craig Biggio was sent up to bat for Clemens in the seventh after a one-out single by Ausmus. Biggio, who has been hit by a major league-record 271 pitches, leaned into the first pitch he saw from Weaver and it struck him near the left elbow. But umpire Doug Eddings ordered Biggio to stay in the batter's box, ruling that he did not attempt to get out of the way.

"I thought it was a great call," Weaver said. "Biggio got his elbow all the way to the outer third of the plate, and with that huge guard on his arm, there's no incentive for him to move. I'm pretty sure that pitch would have been a strike if he didn't put his elbow out there."

Biggio and manager Phil Garner argued with Eddings to no avail. Biggio then flied out to right field and slammed his bat in disgust before running to first base. Eddings pointed to the bat, signifying that Biggio would be fined for his actions, then ejected him for continuing the argument. Biggio threw his batting helmet away and at one point had to be restrained by third base coach Doug Mansolino. Garner was ejected moments later by Eddings.

 Gotta love it.

No matter how many HBPs Biggio finshes with, in my mind that record (with all of its prestige and glory ) still belongs to Baylor, who never walked up to the plate with armor.

The HBP record will always be stupid to me. Who cares about who's the guy who stuck his arm or leg out to get hit the most. For all the high ground that certain media types like to take about steroids and corking, they sure do love it when a guy is gritty enough to cheat and lean into a pitch.

I could never stand Biggio. All of those years he got away with that crap, and then when EY (yeah, that's right, Eric Young) tried it for us in that LA game where those drunks took the hat out of the bullpen, he gets called for it.

It's about time.

That happened to me one time in little league. I tried to get out of the way of the pitch but reacted late (probably due to the fact that I needed glasses by that point) and couldn't move in time. The ump thought that I wasn't trying to avoid the pitch and told me to stay at the plate. That pissed me off so much...

As a Little League umpire, I've made that call before.

It's hard to resist laughter when you know you're right and the team's coach is chewing you out about it.

I showed him who's boss after he dropped the f-bomb on me (Yup, I ejected him)...

Pitchers should go at Biggio's head at least once a game. If he wants to set the HBP record wearing that chicken crap armor on his elbow, make him pay for it.

I wonder if he's the guy who taught Lance Berkman to fake getting hit in the head.

It's a shame that it's taken so long for Biggio's elbow to heal. I mean, that's why he's wearing the plate mail on his arm, right?

Maybe Biggio, Kendall and Bonds all go to the same lousy elbow doctor

It's about time Biggio was called on that crap. He's been leaning into pitches for years.

I'm with you 100% on this one. :thumleft:

I was surprised it took so long for someone to figure this out, I wasd hoping burnitz would take a few as often as they pitch him inside.

I guess Garner comes from the Walter Mathau scool of coaching.

(for ynger ones in her he was the original "Bad News Bears Coach"

IMO, if a player wears that elbow pad and gets hit on the pad, it should be a ball. In 2000, I remember Chad Meyers got hit twice in one game and wasn't awarded 1B either time. (He got 1st the 2nd time b/c it was ball 4)

Shouldn't be a ball if the elbow is in the strike zone though.

=D>

Friggin' A. That guy wears more body armor than King Arthur and all of the Knights of the Roundtable.
