Walker should be a sign and trade, IMO.

I agree with you. He's very valuable as a trade chip, but I'm beginning to think that Hendry wants to go in another direction for 2B.

He may be satisfied to go with Hairston, Cedeno or even Nomar. If he wants to make a deal, the guys I think Hendry is interested in trading for are: Soriano and Castillo. And, I do think that if LA makes Jeff Kent available that the Cubs have the cash to take his contract on for one season - kind of a Baker and Kent one year and done reunion.

Aug. 31 is Wed - let's say if Hendrydeals him in the next 72 hours.

You will get more for Walker in an offseason sign and trade than you will now, because this would be a waiver wire deal; all you'd get is some team's low-level prospect(s) not on their 40-man roster.

I'd rather wait until November/December and get at least one decent player for Walker that can help the 2006 Cubs. A nice reliever would be good. A solid bench outfielder would also be acceptable.

Not a flame, but you'd be ok with trading a solid starting second baseman for a 4th outfielder?

Make Walker part of the Manny Ramirez or Barry Zito trade. Theo and Beane have to love this guy.

If they love him so much why didn't they make more of an effort to keep him?

Excellent question and thank you for raising it. Walker lovers the floor is your's. :D

Zito is not getting traded in the offseason why would they move him they have to spend some payroll and hes the perfect guy to keep with Chavez. Him and Harden is one of the top duos in the game right now why break that up.

I will tell you this though. By not having Hairston and Walker here next year at 2B that jus opens up another hole we have to fill during the offseason. We have no option in the minors that can play 2b either. Makes no sense that we would get rid of both Hairston and Walker.

I'm still waiting for you to answer my previous question.

I wasn't questioning Walkers baseball ability, just Epstiens love for him.

303/354/468 from a 2b, yet some still want to trade him.

those numbers more than make up for his slightly below average D. honestly, i thought he was going to be much worse defensively (based on other people's bad mouthing off his defensive game) than he is.

what second baseman is out there right now that could give us his offensive production for a similar price (assuming we pick up his option for next year)? it's ok to bash the guy, but i haven't heard any realistic options for next year's starting 2B man.

i hear some people clamoring for soriano. he is a butcher in the field and his added offensive production doesn't justify the increase in money spent at that position, especially when we have so many other holes to fill.

Theo in '04 made the mistake of going with Pokey for part of '04, before going to Bellhorn (another offensive 1st 2B) and the rest is history.

But, they didn't think his offense and lack of defense in '03 was worth the 3-4mil. Defensively, '03 was the worst of Walker's career.

Of course, Boston has an offense and to sacrifice some offense for defense can make sense if they already have the ability to score runs, but Boston found out that a bat at 2B can help and did once they got Horny. The Cubs can't score runs and taking away what little offense they have is a poor move, unless easily replaced. Perez puts them in a bigger hole offensively than they're already in, which is saying something.

Soriano: 281/319/532

Walker: 303/354/468

Is Soriano really an upgrade, especially when he'll cost 4-6 million more?

Also, Soriano's road splits for 2005:

237/274/401

I'd worry that he doesn't benefit greatly from the nice dimensions of Ameriquest Field.

While Walker does have better home numbers than road, his road splits are still:

284/339/475

I can't fathom why any intelligent observer of baseball would want Soriano over Walker.

we should get some of those intelligent observer folks to come and run the cubs.

If Walker was the worst offensive player of the position players and they had the financial capabilities to add Soriano, I do it.

That'll never happen, but I still like Soriano.

Jacque Jones, Adam Greenberg, and Brian Giles in left, center, and right.

Aramis Ramirez, Rafael Furcal, Julio Lugo, and Derrek Lee from third to first.

Michael Barrett behind the plate.

Not every spot can be an All-Star. Jones is an outstanding defender, an underappreciated hitter, and he plays every day (unlike some losers I won't mention).

I'd take Murton over Jones.

I like Murton fine, but I'd like to see him do something more than have a nice batting average based on an unsustainable BABIP before I make him a starting corner outfielder on a supposed contender.

How about driving the ball once in a while?

Can one of the Walker boosters tell me why this valuable commodity was let go by Boston, Minnesota, Colorado and the Reds? Why he, if I recall correctly, had offers from only Cleveland and the Cubs (to be a part time player) after having a career year for the Bosox in 2003? There appears to be more than meets the eye with Mr. Walker. Boston is not shy about spending money and I don't think the master plan in Boston was to get Bellhorn a regular job in 2004.

I'm sure this will elicit a response based upon stats about how great Walker is, but I think the major league teams have thesame access to stats as posters here do. Maybe they knew something that isn't reflected in stats. I know that's a radical concept for some here, but not all can be divined from stats.

Bobby Abreu and Johan Santana suck.

Might as well bring Burnitz back then, because he could do the same thing Jones could.
