If he'll take $3m to stay in Chicago, I sign him.

3 million for a guy who has played in 109 games since 2004?

Wow, that would be like paying a starting pitcher who can't stay healthy 12 million......

OTOH, would you rather see him or Neifi starting? No Nomar could make that a reality, with Dusty at the helm.

I'd love to see Nomar here next year with a low base and incentives. He'll be even cheaper next year. Cedeno can back up and fill in if he gets injured. If he gets injured again next year, don't re-sign him.

Something tells me we'll have to pay out the nose for Furcal.

I guess, assuming Dusty is gone, that this team go for the "youth movement" in 2006. Murton in left, Cedeno at short, some of the kids (Pie?) up from the minors. What the hell.

Problem is if Nomar isn't signed, Perez will be back. And you think Baker's going to start Cedeno over Perez? not a chance. Perez will be the everyday SS. That's why I want the Cubs to resign Nomar, because it will surely give Cedeno playing time next year.

I honestly like Nomar and feel horrible that he has been inundated by injuries the past 2+ seasons.

If, and a BIG if the Cubs could sign him for 3.5 w/ incentives. I would love to have him as the everyday SS.

Time will tell but I just can't see Nefi our everyday...unless we throw money at Giles AND Damon AND Wagner

Hendry has to step up and take Dusty's guys away. I totally agree with the post that if Neifi and Cedeno are the SS's on this team, Neifi will most definately be the starter.

I guess if we make improvements other places i'd be ok with Cedeno starting at short, but Neifi has to be let go no matter what.

I was on the fence about Nomar until this back issue became serious. Now I don't want him back even if he is cheap. He is no longer reliable enough to be a "Plan A" for a contender.

Seriosuly if we cant sign Furcal, let's bring up Cedeno and call it a day. Nomar is a good guy but he cant stay healthy and this is a business.

Agreed

Agreed X 2.

I love Nomar, but we can't keep trotting out guys who we can't rely on. Injuries happen, but if you have a bunch of expensive guys whose history suggests that they are more prone to get injured than the avg. player, that's a big problem.

I'm in the camp that says re-sign Nomar for a low base with incentives. The guy was really hitting great until the back thing.

Speaking of which -- why has no one made anything of the fact that being hit by Tavarez was what caused the injury? I was sure at the time that it was a purpose pitch. Tavarez comes in, plunks Nomar (and it isn't close), immediately leaves. Of course, TLR could say that he was bringing in King for the lefty match-up, but I felt that was just a built-in excuse at the time.

I dunno, maybe I just had the Cardinals, ESPECIALLY Tavarez and LaRussa. Anyone else feel that the HBP may have been intentional?

Don't resign Nomar. Even if the Cubs get him for a low price, he's proven that he can't take the physical toll of a major league season any longer. Why waste the money?

Furcal is one of biggest keys for next season. If you don't sign him, you can pretty much write off 2006 as well, since he's the best leadoff guy out there.

There's no guarantee that Upton will be among the handful of Bulls selected for promotion by Tampa Bay when the major-league roster expands on Sept. 1 and after Durham's season ends on Sept. 5. Neither is there a guarantee that Upton will begin the season with the Rays in 2006.

The Rays have a team option for 2006 on Julio Lugo at $4.95 million, with a $100,000 buyout. Even if the Rays choose the buyout route, Lugo would become arbitration eligible and -- unless he is traded -- is likely to remain the starter at shortstop.

Upton was non-committal when asked Tuesday if he would prefer to change positions (third base? outfield?) if it meant a quicker path back to the majors.

"I don't know," Upton said. "Obviously, I want to be in the big leagues. But I do want to play shortstop."

I'm perfectly fine with letting Cedeno handle SS next year IF (big "if") Hendry goes out and gets a couple (or three) really solid outfield bats.

You re-vamp the outfield, and we can AFFORD to let someone sink or swim as a young player. Yo ureturn wit hthe type of offense we got from Patterson, Hollandsworth, Burnitz, Dubois, et al and we need freakin' Miguel Tejada out there.

I'm a little antsy about Furcal and Lugo. Furcal has had the off-field drinking issues, and Lugo was kicked out of Houston after being accused of hitting his wife. Both seem to be behaving this season, but the character issues always make me queasy.

Seems none of that comes along with Nomar, but the injuries make him like Kerry Wood - nice to have if he came cheap and with incentives, but an anchor on the payroll if he's frequently injured.

I could be wrong, but I think the Lugo incident turned out to be false accusations by his wife after further investigation.

I don't know if they were false, or she simply recanted. It certainly is not unusual in domestic violence situations for the victim to recant. That is the reason for new domestic violence laws requiring testimony of victims and now allowing them to dismiss criminal charges.

How about trading for Upton, then? :D

True. I just remember hearing numerous things about her actually being the one that attacked him and he acted in self-defense. I certainly don't know all the facts. If I remember correctly, they were in the middle of the divorce process when this all happened, so it's anyone's guess as to what really happened.

I read a Nomar quote where he said that the HBP made the back hurt more, but it was already bothering him.

I've never been on the Nomar bandwagon, and it seems fairly obvious that this guy's body has become a glass jaw. Has he ever truly been the "every day" shortstop for the Cubs? I certainly wouldn't re-sign him.
