so basically it has taken a recent hot streak to move up the list.

I really dont mind Jose Macias. It is just another example of Dusty not using his resources properly. As a 25th man, pinch run some, early pinch hitter if the starter is bad, spot starter at 3rd. Basically what Dusty had Cedeno doing when he was up. If he ever plays CF again we had better have run out of all possible options. What is silly is he did it several days in a row. He also pinch hits way to much for a guy who is awful at it. If you take away his pinch hitting numbers he is almost credible.

Exactly. Macias isn't bad at all as a 25th man. It's Dusty's complete lack of intelligence when it comes to using Macias that's the problem.

Macias isn't a bad 12th man. Considering the Cubs use twelve pitchers (ugh) I would put Hollandsworth (less-as some of you say) at least lower than Macias due to versatility. Not great defensively, but ok all-around. Anyway, I sit here all the time and rag Macias, but as we all know, the problem isn't Macias, he is a good (dare I say great) bench player. The problem with Macias is, as we all know, Baker's mis-use of him. I, for one, will not fault him for Dusty's ignorance. I like Macias. I like him on our team. I like him after just about everyone else, mind you, but I like him.

Sorry, but not really...

Macias is at 3.6 RC/G, which is a pretty big step up from his numbers of a couple weeks ago(2.8). Before I look any of it up, I'm guessing there are going to be more players that he has outperformed than before. Macias has 128 PA's, so I'll set the minimum at 120. Here are the NL non-catchers worse than him:

Corey Patterson (Demoted previously)

Quentin McCracken

Alex Cintron

Raul Mondesi (released)

Dustan Mohr

Desi Relaford (DFA'd)

Chris Burke

Jose Vizcaino

Cesar Izturis

Mike Edwards (Demoted)

Jason Grabowski

J.J. Hardy

Junior Spivey

Chris Magruder

Kaz Matsui

Tomas Perez

David Bell

Jack Wilson

Sean Burroughs (Demoted)

Cristian Guzman

So with his recent surge, Macias is better than 15 non-catchers who have been in the big leagues all year.

If this is the case, why don't we cut ties with Patterson? Does anyone really think he has changed his approach for good? See what the Yankees would give up for him and be done with it.

freaking stupid move.

Why? WHY? We already have plenty of infielders, and a ton of outfielders.

PLEASE dump Macias and Hollandsworth. Theres no need for them.

I'm really disappointed in Hendry. Murton was playing perfectly fine against BIG LEAGUE pitchers.

I'm pretty bummed too. But on the brightside, Murton will be back in just a few weeks.

AWFUL.

sorry, I have no input other than that. I'll continue my rant once we see Macias in multiple crucial pinch-hitting roles this weekend.

Gotta have 12 pitchers -- and no young position players!!

I really don't like this team's philosophy.

Young position players are so shafted. You perform poorly at first, you never see the light of day. You perform well in a limited role, it's because Dusty put you in the right situation and will never expand your role.

Anybody who believes the BS about it all being about performance should take note.

It has nothing to do with performance. It's all about tenure.

Ans as recently noted by Dusty, salary as well.

I'm a fool for hoping that the Cubs are keeping that ridiculous extra bullpen arm for the weekend in Colorado and will bring Murton back up with the extra arm going down after the weekend.

I doubt it.

Also, make sure to note how much use Wellemeyer gets. He's the 12th arm, and after his terrible outing in Houston, I doubt he pitches more than once a week. In essence, an outing that a 6 man pen could easily handle while we have Macias and Perez pinch hitting. Hopefully Murton continues hitting in Iowa, he's never been there.

It appears Jerry Hairston will be activated day after tomorrow, Friday. What will Hendry/Baker do to get him on the 25 man roster?

(1) Send Matt Murton to the minors.

(2) Send Todd Wellemeyer to the minors (go to 11 pitchers).

(3) Trade a player who has cleared waivers, like Todd Hollandsworth or Todd Walker.

(4) Designate a player for assignment.

(5) Put a player on the DL.

(6) Other

Your thoughts? Give us two answers. What you would do, and what you think the Cubs will do.

Hoops

They picked (1). Hendry is just dreadful sometimes.

I'm getting more and more jaded with the Cubs' philosophy and management, as an organization. It's really hard to watch them and root for them.

I'm spending a week in Belize. The last thing I care about missing is the Cubs. Compare this to 2004 when I was out of town for several months on business and managed to watch nearly every game. And 2003 when I was in Costa Rica for a week but still managed to catch 3 games.

I don't like the lying, I don't like the projecting, I don't like the veteran fetish, and I really don't like the excuses. And yet that's what we see on a daily basis. Oh, and those pesky 8 game losing streaks, too.

Quite frankly, I'd like to see us jettison Perez, Macias, Burnitz, and Hollandsworth and replace them with Cedeno, Fontenot, Murton and Greenberg. Let's see what happens with a little youth.

We optioned Murton?

Why? It makes no sense.

Sure it does. We need 12 pitchers and Murton makes the least amount of money.

Posted

God forbid a young rookie should hit. Dusty hates being proven wrong and getting sent down to the minors is the punishment.

At least Murton will play every day.

I really don't see how anyone can defend the Dusty/Hendry regime at this point.

Posted

I could be wrong, but right now, I believe Murton is the only OF on the roster approaching anything near a .900 OPS.

Naturally, he's the odd man out.

I hate this regime sometimes. I really do.

This is a blurb from Rotoworld. I thought it was funny.

Cubs optioned outfielder Matt Murton to Triple-A Iowa.

Some reward for hitting .339 in 56 at-bats. He'll be back in September, though. Jerry Hairston Jr. will take all of Murton's playing time. Aug. 19 - 2:48 pm et

Ack! This move stinks. Maybe his OBP was too high in the Cubs eyes. Too many clogged bases. Grrrrrrrrrr.

Doesn't Murton have to be on the 25-man roster BEFORE Sept. 1 to be eligible for the playoff roster?

Something tells me that won't be an issue.

If the Cubs fail to make-up any ground before September, and they keep running out the likes of Burnitz & Co. everyday, then perhaps the Cubs fans who still think this regime is doing well will change their mind.

If the argument is you can't use kids when trying to contend, then what would be the defense for not using kids when you can no longer pretend that you are contending?

But even if they fail to make up any ground, they will still be able to say they are "in the race" until there are very few games left, at which point many casual fans who still back the Cubs brass won't care what happens.
