I think the additional competition Willis is providing will split Clemens' votes, thereby cementing Carpenter's chances, don't you think?

I honestly don't think Clemens has a prayer anymore. From all the sports talk I've heard, and articles I've read, he blew it once his ERA came back down to earth. Plus, many people have actually said that Willis could get a lot of votes simply because he's 23 and Carp is 30. I don't know if I buy that, but you never know what will happen.

Actually, I think the opposite could occur, opening the door for Clemens. Those voters who look primarily at wins will be split between Carpenter and Willis right now. Willis has more wins; Carpenter a more impressive winning percentage.

Those who look more at ERA, RA, or VORP are likely already in the Clemens camp. A few extra wins by Carpenter or Willis will not sway them and its unlikely that Willis will pass Clemens in those stats. A split in the voters who place a high value of wins could open the door for Clemens to win the award.

Also keep in mind that the voters don't just choose one person. The ballot contains a 12t, 2nd, and 3rd place with points valued accordingly. Depending on how these players are ranked could end up determining the award. A player could end up on more first place ballots than any of the other two and still not win the award if a player on fewer first place garners more second place votes over third place votes.

Un-Cy like Carpenter line against the Brewers:

5.1IP 12H 9R 9ER 2.71 ERA (1 runner left on scored)

Willis is closing...

How is Willis closing? He has a 2.44 ERA. That's better than Carpenter's, no?

I realize some fools factor in W/L record into the voting, but Willis deserves it. MVP is an individual award.

Updated numbers:

Carpenter: 21-5; 2.71 ERA; WHIP 1.04

Willis: 22-9; 2.44 ERA; WHIP 1.09

Clemens: 12-8; 1.89 ERA; 1.00 WHIP

Willis's credentials now equal Carpenter's. With one start for each left this season(Clemens is not starting today), it could still go either way.

I'm still inclined to go with Clemens, but Dontrelle has come on strong enough to overtake Carpenter in some of the voting.

I'm trying real hard not to be like the many idiots who are in full panic mode, but it's getting hard. Let's just say I'm am concerned. A lot of people are writing it off to already having clinched, but I'm saying that's a bunch of crap if winning the Cy isn't motivation enough for Carp and proving himself to his new manager Mulder then there's a bigger issue. I think they are trying just as hard. I think maybe all this Cy Young talk is getting to Carp a little bit. Maybe it was just a bad night for Mark. We'll see I guess.

I'd like to see Willis win now. :-D Only because I root for underdogs in situations where I really don't care.

I agree. I don't not care to the point where I could stomach an absolutely ludicrous winner (Sergio Mitre, say) but there's cases (and good ones) for all three.

Give it to Dontrelle.

How is Willis an underdog?

He wears a cape.

Is his arch enemy Simon Bar Sinister?

I think he was referring to the fact that for the most of the summer, Willis hasn't been a part of the conversation.

We have a new 2nd place NL VORP leader...

1. Roger Clemens 77.7

2. Andy Pettitte 69.6

3. Chris Carpenter 69.0

4. Dontrelle Willis 67.3

5. Pedro Martinez 66.6

6. Roy Oswalt 66.3

Wow, are the Astros a pitching machine this year! Will a 2/3 way Houston split let Carpenter or Willis walk away with the award? Will Carpenter and Willis' poor last starts taint the voting? Will the Cubs lose quickly for Houston's clinched WC and allow Clemens to skip his last start?

Every team should be VERY concerned about the possibility of facing Houston in a short series.

With Lidge on the backside of those starters, they will be tough.

Those two starters have put the Astros on their backs. If it weren't for them, I doubt the Astros are within sniffing distance of the wild card. Also, if they continue pitching like that, they could be very dangerous in the play-offs.
