In his previous three seasons with the Devil Rays, Jorge Sosa never managed an ERA under 4.62.

As of today, his ERA in Atlanta is 2.36.

Leo Mazzone should be in the Hall of Fame.

Who here thinks the Yankees will overpay/trade for Sosa and then watch his ERA skyrocket back to 5.00?

HERE i THOUGHT THIS WAS GOING TO BE ABOUT FARNSY

MAZZONE....WHAT CAN YOU SAY THAT HASNT ALREADY BEEN SAID?

Wait a little while, Farnsworth will be one of the best closers in the league. I said a few years ago, if we ever let him go, he would make us pay more than any other player has.

Becuase I'm now living in a fantasy baseball world created by MVP 2005, I would compare Mazzone to whomever is the pitching coach for the MVP 2005 Cubs in my self-created world. The guy is great He can take a pitcher with an 80 rated FB and a 59 rated curve and no other pitch and turn him into a guy with a 1.23 ERA and 20 wins.

I agree, my team ERA is so low it's unbelievable. Greg Maddux leads the majors in strikeouts!

OIh, of course they will. Jaret Wright anyone? The Yankees, or Steinbrenner I should say, have a problem spending big money on guys who were good the year before and horrible previous to that. Wright, Womack, Pavano, etc.

My God, I would kill to have Mazzone here for just one season. Imagine what he could do for our staff...

He should just sign 1 year contracts, then every offseason offer his services in an auction to the highest bidder.

Farnsworth tallied his 4th save last night and looked nasty doing it. His ERA is hovering somewhere a little over 1.00, and his WHIP is less than 1.00.

I don't guess I have to mention Novoa's effort yesterday.

Anyone who pitches for the Braves will have good success. Look at Alfonseca. He sucked w/ the Cubs, has like a 2.50 ERA in Atlanta, goes back to Florida and he SUCKS! I'm surprised Danny Graves didn't sign w/ the Braves when he was DFA.

Atlanta will probably never let him go, but if his contract ever runs out, I'd give him a blank contract, let him work for whatever he wants. He'd be worth every penny.

Which makes me wonder why anyone would trade for Atlanta's pitchers or their pitching prospects. Other than Jason Schmidt, I'm trying to think of impact pitchers that they let go who then had success after leaving. I still remember people scratching their heads when they let go of Avery, Rocker, Milwood, etc. It will be interesting to see how the two pitchers we picked up from them in the Holla trade work out. I remember other trades we made getting some of their pitching prospects not working out --Michah Bowie, Ruben Quevedo and Andy freakin' Pratt.

From the wayback machine, didn't Paul Assenmacher come from the Braves? He was a very effective loogy for some bad Cub teams, IIRC.

Good call. But I'll call him the exception rather than the rule until we come up with other names.

Without question. I was just trying to see if I could come up with someone. Further, he came to the Cubs in '89, before Atlanta got things together. I don't even know if Scheurholz was in place then.

Marquis has gotten better since leaving Atlanta. Apparently Mazzone wanted him to throw mainly a four seamer and when he got to St. Louis Duncan told him to go with what god gave him and throw the sinker. When Marquis throws the sinker he is very good. It's when he gets it into his head that he's a strikeout pitcher and starts tossing all kinds of breaking stuff that he gets lit up.

As much as I like Mazzone I still wonder what the deal is with the umps always giving the Brave pitchers the outside part of the plate. What happened to that computer that was suppose to track pitches?

Questec is the system. I don't know if MLB still uses it. I know a few years ago Curt Schilling smashed one of those cameras w/ a bat and got fined 10 Grand.

Thanks. It's just another MLB idea that they don't follow through with.

Save No. 5 for Farnsworth last night.

I think we can officially say that Jim Hendry's "Bad Guy Purge" was a disaster.

Besides Jason Schmidt?

Paul Byrd, Jason Marquis, Kent Merker, and Odalis Perez have all had varying levels of success... with Odalis Perez easily the strongest of the bunch (and he's still plenty young)

Then again, the Braves did get back Gary Sheffield for Perez, so they still spanked everybody else.

What can you not say about Atlanta?

Best manager-Cox

Best pitching coach-Mazzone

Best GM-Schuerholz

Best scouts

Best minor league instructors

Best approach to winning

Best Farm system over the last 15 years...

How many division titles?

Haven't seen prolonged winning like this since the O's of the late 60s to the early 80s.

Best franchise in my lifetime.
