Pignatiello pitched two perfect innings in relief. 9-0 Iowa through 8.

Sisk with a flair to center and two runs score! Montanez holds at second and it's 3-1 Diamond Jaxx!

Harvey also hit #21!

And 3 RBIs! Looks like a good night for the farm system.

Jose Reyes drives in Montanez. 4-1 Diamond Jaxx in the 11th!

Abercrombie drops Bacon's fly ball and it's now 6-1. The Diamond Jaxx have batted around in the 11th.

By the way, very nice start by Marmol: 6 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts. His ERA drops to 2.81.

I doubt Corey has changed anything too much from what he was doing (at least physically, with his swing). He hasn't had time to reinvent himself or anything. I think the main value in sending him down was clearing his head. He will probably still be more aggressive that we would like, but hopefully he can hammer the fat pitches with regularity, like he did in 2003 and parts of 2004. At the time he got sent down, he couldn't hit anything, even if it was fastball right down the middle.

At this point, the best thing to do with Corey is to just not coach him. Whatever they were telling him to do this year wasn't working. He's a gifted enough athlete that he can do OK but just going off his instincts at the plate, and he can't be any worse than Macias in CF.

He still has a ways to go with his command of the strike zone, but I was mostly concerned with the the poor hitting when he made contact. And it'll be interesting to see what happens when he starts working with Clines again...

I also don't really care what he brings to the team this season, but it is important for him to get plenty of ABs in the big leagues before next season, IMO.

Woo! Corey is 2-2 with a solo HR and 2-run HR!

The first was to right and the second was to center.

And Mitre is pitching quite well through 4.

=D>

Corey is now 3-3 with 4 RBIs. He also now has 5 HRs at Iowa and a BA of .297.

Mitre is a groundball machine tonight.

i wish he'd concentrate on slapping the ball more...juan pierre style. :D

Would you also want him to get caught stealing more often? :P

CUBS SWEEP HAMMERHEADS TO END MEMORABLE HOME STAND

Daytona Took Both Ends Of The Double-Dip To Sweep Jupiter And End The Seven-Game Stand At 6-1

By Bo Fulginiti

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—In a season of many peaks and valleys, things are starting to look up again for the Daytona Cubs.

After a surprising slow start to the second half of the season, the Cubs seem to finally have their sea legs back underneath them, and anyone needing proof would have to look no further than Monday’s double-header against the Jupiter Hammerheads at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

In the final two games of a seven-game home stand, Daytona decided to let their young arms lead the way. The Cubs pitching staff combined to surrender just two earned runs in 14 innings, as Daytona controlled both ends of the twin bill and won by finals of 7-3 in the first contest and 4-2 in the finale.

Daytona lefty Chris Shaver (2-0) got the nod in the first game and went five strong innings as he gave up just three runs (all unearned) and struck out four en route to his second straight Florida State League victory.

Cubs centerfielder Chris Walker led the charge offensively, as he registered a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with a two-RBI triple and two runs scored. J.J. Johnson also added two hits in a 2-for-3 night with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Jupiter starter Paul Mildren (7-3) lasted just four innings and gave up seven runs (five earned) as he was charged with the loss for the Hammerheads in the first contest.

The Cubs wasted no time in making a statement in the back end of the double-header, as first baseman Brian Dopirak crushed a first inning three-run homer to centerfield off of Jupiter starter Allen Baxter (1-6) to take a 3-0 lead. Daytona would later add some insurance in the fifth, as Johnson scored on a throwing error from catcher Greg Brown to give the Cubs a 4-2 lead they would refuse to let go of.

Daytona starter Yorkin Ferreras was solid in his ninth start, as he pitched four-plus innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out five for the no-decision.

Cubs righty Lee Gwaltney (2-3) pitched two full innings of shutout ball and struck out two for the win. Standout southpaw Clay Rapada also chipped in with a flawless seventh frame to notch his fifth save of the season.

Leading the way at the plate in the second contest was once again Walker who went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. The two swiped bags have now raised his Florida State League leading total to 47.

With the double-header sweep, the Cubs finished their seven-game home stand at 6-1, as they improved to 20-23 for the second half of the season.

Daytona will now embark on a six-game road trip beginning on Tuesday at Holman Stadium against the powerhouse Vero Beach Dodgers.

The Cubs will send righty Juan Mateo (8-5, 3.63 ERA) to the mound to make the series opening start.

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.

Wow, quite a day on the farm! 6 wins!

Gotta love how the Jaxx pitched to Hermida: Sing's rival for MVP went 0-5 with 4 strikeouts.

What does anyone know about Victor Ramos? Yesterday, he struck out the side in his inning of relief for W. Tenn, dropping his ERA to 1.80. Looking at his stats, I notice he started the season in Boise, then was promoted quickly to Peoria, then skipped up to W. Tenn. Is he older or is he a prospect?

Another nice day for E Patterson. Gotta love all of his extra base hits.

And Mitre belongs as a starter in my opinion. He showed it once again tonight. If Hill struggles in the next start or two, I wouldn't be against giving the ball to Mitre every 5th day. Of course, if the Cubs are out of it, I'd give spot starts to Pinto as well.

Victor Ramos?

Nope, I know nothing. There was a latin player I was very excited about around 2-3 years ago named Jonathon Ramos - a lefty who put up absurd numbers in the DSL at a young age. But he hurt his arm and the Cubs dropped him either at the beginning of this year or last year.

It's all a blur now!

According to the website, he's a 23-year-old (turns 24 in October) 6'3'', 220 pound righty out of Puerto Rico. He signed with the Cubs as a free agent this year. It looks like he was with the Pirates as late as early this season. They selected him in the 35th round of the 2000 draft.

Ramos was drafted out of Puerto Rican HS by Pittsburgh as a catcher. Last year he switched to pitching, with a 1.64 ERA and sub-1 WHIP in 33 innings of shortseason ball. Pittsburgh released him and the Cubs picked him up.

He didn't have enough years to qualify as a 6-year-free-agent, so I'm sure Pittsburgh released him. Probably nothing exceptional about his arm or velocity, or they'd have kept him.
