ESPN confirmed it was for Gerut. I posted earlier in another thread that the two players were almost the same guy - just that Gerut is younger and Lawton draws more walks. Their average seasons are nearly identical aside from Lawton's better patience and a little better SB numbers.

I like the move, though it means Murton sits behind Holla and Lawton now.

To me it means Hollandsworth assumes the role his best suited for PH-4OF, maybe, its for the best, I didn't like the prospect of watching Hill, Mitre or Wellemeyer winning 15-18 games next season for the Reds, Rangers or Devil Rays.[/quote]

I haven't seen enough out of them to make that suggestion quite yet.

Granted that may have been a little outrageous on my part but, this is the Cubs and we all know they've been burned time and time again in such a manner.

Some people are never happy.

Hendry's at least trying. He might even give Lawton an extension. We could be fans of Cincy, or Texas, who have ZERO chance of getting better.

I would hope Lawton isn't given a payraise if he does get an extension. He's already overpaid for what he offers. I'm happy with the move. It gets a guy on base in this lineup.

And I don't know why you grouped Texas with Cincy. Texas has a great young IF, a couple good young OFs, and a couple of good minor league pitching prospects....not to mention a winning record this season.

A 2 year 12.5-13 mil with an option for a third year wouldn't be that bad IMO.

Rotoworld says Gerut for Lawton. I like it.

Hey, whats not to like? The Cubs went into the deadline needing OBP. The guy with the highest OBP on the block was Dunn, but the price was too high, and understandably so. The next best was Lawton and the Cubs got him. In fact, of all the players trade, Lawton's .380 OBP this year and .370 career is the highest. The Cubs got the best that was out there in the area of their greatest need and only gave up Dubois/Gerut to get him. I understand that Lawton may not be the best defensive OFer, but if he can lead-off and get on base 38% of the time in front of DLee, Nomar and Ramirez, his offense, base-stealing and run-scoring ability should outweigh any defensive liability he may bring.

Lawton on the year is batting .273/.380/.433/.813 with 28 doubles, 1 triple, 10 HRs, 16 SBs with 61 Ks against 58 walks.

Lawton

Nomar

Lee

Burnitz

Ramirez

Walker

Barrett

Murton

with Lawton in RF could be the line-up the Cubs take into the final months of the season. Will that get the job done?

play lawton in center, move hairston to left

Lineup after nomar comes back

CF Lawton

2B Walker

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

RF Burnitz

SS Garciaparra

LF Murton/Hairston

C Barrett

Can't we move him to Center and play Murton in left?

BTW, he's much worse against lefties...

Anybody else notice we're the only team in the NL playoff hunt who acquired a bat (so far)?

*points the post above mine*

O_O makes a good point here. All the other teams that traded was either a pitcher or didn't do any moves. Not to mention that Wood, Garciaparra, and Williamson could be activiated by this coming Friday.

It'll be a interesting race.

Haha, for what it's worth, Lawton has a better OBP than Johnny Damon by .001 this year.

Depends what else is out there. I'd still like to see Hendry go after Dunn, Huff, Manny this offseason. The Cubs are gonna have an interesting decision whether or not to offer arbitration.

Of course I'm not going to be happy because we won't make the playoffs. We should've just stayed put.

Okay, we're aware that you're convinced the season is over. You've made basically the exact same post 5 times.

hahaha what? we clearly upgraded in left, and gave up virtually nothing at all. how can you say you are happier staying put?

Awesome trade. Not the big move we were looking for, but if he can throw a .380 obp up for the rest of the season, it's a great trade. Im shocked the Pirates didn't get a minor leaguer out of this deal to go along with Gerut.

Even though it is just Lawton, this seems to be the biggest deadline deal this year. That market is just dead, and for Hendry to get Lawton for Gerut is real good move. Littlefield may want to avoid Hendry in the future if he wants to keep his job.

But Lawton is a guy with a .380+ OBP, moderate power, steals a few bases, and most importantly removes Holla from the starting equation. Not big impact move, but a definate improvement.

He isn't a very good CFer and hasn't played there since 2000. He can play CF, but Burnitz and Hairston would be the better defensive options. I would play Burnitz in CF while rotating in Hairston when the pitching match-ups call for it. Against right-handed pitchers, Lawton leads off and plays one of the corner OF spots. Against lefties, Hairston leads off and plays CF.

When I heard the Cubs made a trade I immediately went to the minor league box scores to make sure Eric Patterson and Brandon Sing hadn't been strangely removed from their respective lineups. The guy who was pitching against West Tennessee did get traded by Florida and was removed from the game in the second inning though.

You're right, t is the biggest deadline deal this year.

This was a good trade for the Pirates though. Lawton was going to be gone next year and Gerut has some nice upside at a lower cost.

Raw I think alot will depend on the future of Corey Patterson with the Cubs. For some reason I just don't see Dunn, Huff, or Manny with the Cubs. Of all the Reds' outfielders I see Kearns a Cub if possible, but I'm not holding my breath. I still think Hendry will look for a mid-tier OF help next year (Brian Giles, Luis Gonzalez).

It was a lot less than Pittsburgh had hoped to get for Lawton, though. People in Pittsburgh are not going to be happy.

Because after today, we'll be lucky not to be 5 games back of the WC, and it's not like this acqusition makes us an incredibly better team.

Lawton is a nice player, but he won't really put us over the top.

Lawton has an excellent platoon split, very good day/night splits. Going by Runs Created, here's some people Lawton has been better than this year:

Jose Guillen

Andruw Jones

Craig Biggio

Brady Clark

Geoff Jenkins

Carlos Beltran

Ryan Klesko

it's a good low risk move, as well. if he plays well for the cubs down the stretch, and the cubs make some noise...great...maybe offer him a two year deal. if not, just let him walk, and all you're out is jody gerut (or jd, i suppose).

better than giving up the farm for a huge contract/rental that doesn't get you to the postseason.

the additions of Nomar-Lawton-Williamson-Wood could very well put us over the top in the WC standings.

It's the Pirates though... they've probably been either apathetic or pissed off for the past 10 years. How much worse could it get over the trade of a pretty good but aging outfielder who wasn't going to be there next year anyway?

I wouldnt say that we gave up nothing for Lawton.
