You guys honestly think this move wll put us over the top to make the playoffs? No [expletive] way. We're done for. SO, now we dont have Gerut or Dubois and end up with an older veteran who will be a rental. I don't like it one bit.

Who cares, Lawton isn't a difference-maker, offense is still pathetic, manager is still a nitwit, bullpen is still a collection of gas cans. This mediocre 500 team remains a mediocre 500 team.

Matt Lawton, wow, I'm so excited. Especially since Matt Murton will never play again.

What an awful job this organization has done since last July, just plain awful.

I just watched another strikeout from Dusty Pet Todd Mulletsworth, man, that never gets old.

hahahahahaha i was waiting for this post as soon as i heard the deal went down

i don't know what you expect the cubs to do. if no one was willing to trade a guy like dunn or manny or kearns, then this is a great deal.

I'd have liked for them to have done more, but not a bad trade. Gerut for Lawton and we saved our minor leaguers. Now we just have to wonder what JH is gonna do so a lot of them don't get Rule V'ed.

Yeah, I was calling for the Cubs to trade for Lawton last night. I thought he was the perfect fit for what the Cubs needed and wouldn't cost the Cubs a top prospect.

I was very excited to see the banner across the screen on ESPNews that the Cubs had got him. Still no info on who they gave up. That, of course, will have a lot to do with whether or not we consider this a good trade.

One rumor had stated that Gerut would go to Pittsburgh. If thats the case, the Cubs gave up Dubois for a rent-a-player.

Interestingly, Cubs.com has just posted an article stating that the Cubs were "quiet" at the deadline.

BTW - I saw that article, too, but it is no longer on the Cubs.com front page.

The link still works, though...

ESPN says it's a straight up trade, Gerut for Lawton.

Very good deal, he's hitting .279/.386/.465 in 312 AB's in the leadoff spot this year with 10 home runs.

Anyone know his contract situation?

IIRC he isn't signed past this year.

I'm happy about the trade because it at least suggests that Hendry is aware of the team's OBP problem, and because the Cubs didn't give up much that was going to be of value in the future.

ESPN confirmed it was for Gerut. I posted earlier in another thread that the two players were almost the same guy - just that Gerut is younger and Lawton draws more walks. Their average seasons are nearly identical aside from Lawton's better patience and a little better SB numbers.

I like the move, though it means Murton sits behind Holla and Lawton now.

To me it means Hollandsworth assumes the role his best suited for PH-4OF, maybe, its for the best, I didn't like the prospect of watching Hill, Mitre or Wellemeyer winning 15-18 games next season for the Reds, Rangers or Devil Rays.

Posted

It's also rumored that the Cards were hard after him. That wouldn't have been too good had they acquired him.

Granted, the Cubs have virtually no chance of catching the Cards, but that doesn't mean I want the Cards getting any better either.

Lawton can't hit lefties so it would make sense to let Murton face LHP's. The odd man out should be Hollandsworth since he's a lefty who can't hit anybody.

Some people are never happy.

Hendry's at least trying. He might even give Lawton an extension. We could be fans of Cincy, or Texas, who have ZERO chance of getting better.

I haven't seen enough out of them to make that suggestion quite yet.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing at the though of an OK pitcher like Mitre or Wellemeyer being able to win 15-18 games for a sad-sack club like the D-Rays.

And good point about the Cards, with their OF woes I would think they'd be interested in a guy like Lawton. I can't believe they couldn't give the Pirates something of greater value than Jody Gerut.

I would hope Lawton isn't given a payraise if he does get an extension. He's already overpaid for what he offers. I'm happy with the move. It gets a guy on base in this lineup.

And I don't know why you grouped Texas with Cincy. Texas has a great young IF, a couple good young OFs, and a couple of good minor league pitching prospects....not to mention a winning record this season.

Right, I'm agreeing with you. Interesting that they had that up right away (note the time stamp says 4:00 PM - right at the deadline). Appears that they posted it too early and took it off (hoping no one would notice?).

Awesome trade. Not the big move we were looking for, but if he can throw a .380 obp up for the rest of the season, it's a great trade. Im shocked the Pirates didn't get a minor leaguer out of this deal to go along with Gerut.
Posted

hey, hendry DOES know what obp means!

good deal for the cubs...nothing big, but i honestly don't know if something big would have made a difference anyway. i'm not so sure that this team is an adam dunn away from a world series win.

and thank you for not trading hill or pie, JH!

Anybody else notice we're the only team in the NL playoff hunt who acquired a bat (so far)?

Yeah, i gotta believe boston is pretty pissed off. Jose Cruz or Matt Lawton.....hmmm.
