Just checked his numbers and it looks like he hasn't played center since 2000. I expect Lawton to take over full time in left, which means Murton is probably going to be sent back down unless Holla and Gerut are both gone. I sure hope Murton didn't go to Pittsburgh as part of the deal.

That's a great trade by Hendry if it's just Gerut. Lawton gives us a legitimate lead-off hitter with a great OBP. I was hoping for a Dunn, Manny type guy, but Lawton definitely makes this team better.

Yeah, I was calling for the Cubs to trade for Lawton last night. I thought he was the perfect fit for what the Cubs needed and wouldn't cost the Cubs a top prospect.

I was very excited to see the banner across the screen on ESPNews that the Cubs had got him. Still no info on who they gave up. That, of course, will have a lot to do with whether or not we consider this a good trade.

One rumor had stated that Gerut would go to Pittsburgh. If thats the case, the Cubs gave up Dubois for a rent-a-player.

Interestingly, Cubs.com has just posted an article stating that the Cubs were "quiet" at the deadline.

BTW - I saw that article, too, but it is no longer on the Cubs.com front page.

Who cares, Lawton isn't a difference-maker, offense is still pathetic, manager is still a nitwit, bullpen is still a collection of gas cans. This mediocre 500 team remains a mediocre 500 team.

Matt Lawton, wow, I'm so excited. Especially since Matt Murton will never play again.

What an awful job this organization has done since last July, just plain awful.

I just watched another strikeout from Dusty Pet Todd Mulletsworth, man, that never gets old.

ESPN says it's a straight up trade, Gerut for Lawton.

Very good deal, he's hitting .279/.386/.465 in 312 AB's in the leadoff spot this year with 10 home runs.

Anyone know his contract situation?

Didn't have to give up much to get him.

Not the blockbuster we were looking for. Wonder what the reaction is going to be in the clubhouse?

P.S. What's the record for most members on at one time?

Good trade IMO for the Cubs. Gerut & Murton was in a platoon in Left & it's was only a matter of time till Murton was moved back to the bench by Dusty. Gerut power has come back slowly after his knee operation with no signs he will show his power from his rookie year. Lawton gives the Cubs a good eye with descent speed whose contract is up next year.

Yup, ESPN just confirmed that it is Gerut for Lawton.

Clearly, Hendry is doing everything he can, without hurting the club long-term by giving up top prospects, to prepare the team to win the wildcard. Lawton will give the Cubs their best lead-off hitter since Lofton. The question is where will he play? He isn't exactly a CFer. Does Burnitz play CF and Lawton play RF? Do you keep Hairston in CF and have Lawton in LF? How should Lawton be used?

7.75 million this year, free agent after this year.

Yeah, I am sure his .382 OBP can't help this offense AT ALL.

Some people are just never happy.

I believe he is a free agent after this year.

Honestly, with Murton having very good speed, doesn't he have some ability to play center?

Lawton's a rental. FA after this season. He's an OK OF, but not good enough to play CF.

I'm thinking the lineup will be

LF-Lawton

CF-Hairston

1B-Lee

RF-Burnitz

3B-Ramirez

SS-Nomar

2B-Walker

C-Barrett

come friday.

ESPN confirmed it was for Gerut. I posted earlier in another thread that the two players were almost the same guy - just that Gerut is younger and Lawton draws more walks. Their average seasons are nearly identical aside from Lawton's better patience and a little better SB numbers.

I like the move, though it means Murton sits behind Holla and Lawton now.

I don't think so. Dusty has no reason to play Holla anymore, Lawton takes Holla's place, and Murton remains the RH component of the platoon. At least that's the way I see it.

actually I believe this was a good deal for Pitt, a good deal for us, but definitely not the fleecing that we are used to. Gerut is cheap, and can be an average starter.

Im pretty happy about Lawton. Very good OPB. Not many Ks. Good speed. Better than Hairston at the top of the order and bats left. He's a big upgrade in LF. (I like Murton but he wouldnt of played everyday)
