Apparently, to help ease the money in the deal, Sidney Ponson would be heading to Florida to make it easier for Baltimore to stomach Lowell.

Old news... as far as I can tell (from news reports) the BoSox are back in the lead for Burnett

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel and The Minneapolis Star-Tribune are both reporting a three-way deal among the Minnesota Twins, Florida Marlins and Boston Red Sox was scuttled on July 20. In the deal, the Twins would have gotten Red Sox 3B Bill Mueller and prospects for sending SP Joe Mays to the Marlins and RP J.C. Romero to the Red Sox. Boston would have picked up SP A.J. Burnett and 3B Mike Lowell from the Marlins, and Florida would have gotten SP Bronson Arroyo from Boston. Twins officials denied that such a deal had been in the works.

I seriously don't get why Florida would do that deal with Boston. They get two mediocre starters in Arroyo and Mays, no young prospects, and Boston basically gets the best of all worlds. It sounds like a random rumor you'd see on some hack Red Sox board.

The latest was a 3 way deal between Florida, Baltimore and of all teams Tampa Bay

Baltimore said they will only take Mike Lowell if Florida takes Ponson so they worked this out...

Baltimore would send the same package of players that had been reported for the past week to AND Sidney Ponson Florida - Florida would send Burnett and Lowell to Baltimore - Then Florida would send Ponson to Tampa Bay (with Florida paying most of his salary) for Trevor Miller. PROBLEM! :!: Ponson has a limited no trade clause which lists 10 teams that he can veto a trade to and Tampa Bay is one of those teams and he told Baltimore today he would not waive it. So it looks like that deal is dead unless Florida can fnd another taker for Ponson.

They save a ton of money and in FLA Arroyo will be very very good.

Bronson Arroyo is a pretty good pitcher and cheap for the next 3 years! But, I think Florida would prefer a deal with Baltimore.

I bet that Lowell goes to Baltimore, a pretty good hitters park, IIRC, and starts doing better.

Wouldn't suprise me. Dolphins Stadium is more of a pitcher's park IMHO.

I just can't see that deal going down without the Red Sox flipping one of Lester, Sanchez, or Hanley to the Marlins. Arroyo is pretty good, but they're basically giving up a stud #1 prospect and an above average (albeit overpaid) 3B for two slightly above average pitchers (imo), one of whom can't stay healthy for the life of him.

I can't see the Marlins doing that unless they got a top notch and near ML-ready prospect out of it.

Tony Massarotti from The Boston Herald is reporting today that the trade is done.

CHICAGO - With Major League Baseball's trading deadline less than 10 days away, the first dominoes began to topple last night with the news that pitcher A.J. Burnett was headed to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles, Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Devil Rays have consumated a deal that would bring Burnett to Baltimore along with infielder Mike Lowell and minor league outfielder Eric Reed. In return, the Marlins were to receive outfielder Larry Bigbie, starter Hayden Penn and relievers Jorge Julio and Steve Kline.

The final stage of the deal would be for the Orioles to find a home for starter Sidney Ponson in order to clear payroll to take on Lowell's salary.

Sources said Baltimore wanted to send Ponson to Florida, who in turn would ship him to the Devil Rays in exchange for one of three relievers - Trever Miller, Travis Harper or Lance Carter.

That's a lot of relievers for Florida. Kline, Julio and any of the TB guys make a pretty good back of the pen. Mota would definitely be available.

Good point. I could see Hendry making a deal for Pierre and Mota. I wouldn't necessarily like it, but I could see it.[/i]

Look slike the Burnett to Baltimore is dead.

Baltimore just traded Ponson to Sd for Phil Nevin.

I don't know if that deal keeps them from acquiring Burnett. They take on a little salary, but they didn't give up any pieces they would need to acquire Burnett, plus they opened up a spot in their rotation with the deal.

so the pads lose two of their top 10 prospects AND add joe randa AND add sidney ponson AND send burroughs to the minors AND have to send eaton to the bullpen? awesome day to be a padre fan.

The Padres have a need for a starter because Adam Eaton (9-2 in 14 starts, 3.42 ERA) is likely heading to the bullpen. Bothered by elbow pain, Eaton can't throw his curveball, relegating him as a fastball-changeup reliever.
