Not enough credit has been given to Burnitz & JH on this board. This is turning into a great move by JH & the Cubs. Burnitz hustles & plays as hard as anyone in the game. I wasn't a huge proponent of the Burnitz signing in the off-season, but I wasn't a complete doubter like many people here. Burnitz is proving alot of you wrong. He is un upgrade in RF over Sosa with his strong arm & has far better range than Sosa. Adding some pop from the left side was one of Hendry's goal's in the offseason, including moving the egocentric Sosa & he did both. Props goes out to both!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK JIM & JEROMY!

I was against the Burnitz acquisition, but Burnitz has done a pretty good job. Even so, this team still has some serious issues and my prediction of us not making the playoffs looks more and more real by the day.

There was a good shot of Burnitz busting his hump down the first base line in yesterday's game. If anyone else saw it, it was the true definition of the word "gamer".

Yes, that was my motivation to starting a thread on Burnitz & is all out play.

I don't know about the rest of you folks, but I do like Burnitz for several reasons.

1. That he is a lefty that we sorely lacked for awhile.

2. That he is not afraid to take chances. There are several times that he has sacerficed his body just to make a catch, like Hollansworth does.

3. That he's not afraid to accept his mistakes/responsibilities. Yes, I know that 3rd base pick-off sucked, and he knew that. He could had simply said "Well I slipped and I couldn't get back in time." But he didn't. He just accepted that it was his fault.

Like many of you, I was prepared to hate Burnitz when we signed him. I must admit, though, he has been a very pleasant surprise so far this season. He seems to be streaky, which not at all unusual, and right now he his hot. Look at his OBP the last month !!

Burnitz AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS

In terms of production (OPS) per million dollars in salary, Burnitz is far and away a better value than any of the other outfielders we were considering in the off season. Let's hope he stays hot for a good long while.

Would you happen to have Jeromy's stats on how he does after the all-star break in his career?

No, I just started keeping stats on individual players this year, so I only have '05 in my database. (I was thinking maybe that long off season would be a good time to start working backwards on that.)

Ah, very well. I appreciate the work you do for the stats. You do a fine job at it.

Burnitz 2002-2004, pre and post ASB, courtesy of my databa...... ESPN.com:

        2002 2003 2004
Pre Post Pre Post Pre Post
Avg .206 .228 .274 .204 .287 .278
OBP .305 .321 .344 .252 .356 .357
SLG .326 .421 .581 .391 .551 .570
OPS .631 .742 .925 .643 .907 .927

2003 year was a rough one for Burnitz, physically and mentally. He broke his hand in April of that year, and later was traded to the Dodgers, with whom he did horribly (as evidenced by his post-ASB numbers that year). His 2004 numbers are obviously Coors Field inflated.

For his career (thanks to my si.com database) he is .856 ops to .820 ops the second half.

I agree with you on that one. I was impressed with the hustle on the play.

Ok, I'm glad Jeromy Burnitz is the Cubs RFer. There I said it. I cannot help but like the guy. He is playing hard every day and that is all I ask.

Way to go Jeromy!

I still miss Sammy

I was ready to hate the guy when he came over here, but he's also won me over with his effort and at the very least adequate defense and production from RF.

If he's here next year, I just hope we have a better CF and LF to play with him.

adequate defense? I'd say he's had Stellar Defense.

Boy, I'd say he deserves consideration, but will lose, for the gold glove. His positioning is incredible - I can't count the number of times he's cut a ball off holding a runner to a single instead of a double, which is pretty darn crucial. He is so much better than Sammy in RF it's not funny, and Sammy got to a lot of balls with his speed.

His bat has been very good. He plays everyday and he plays hard everyday. I really think the guy could play another couple years at this level he seems like he's in such good shape.

Wasn't thrilled about the signing, or his past stats, but he's been very good for us this year. If we had a slugger in LF and Burnitz was batting lower in the order I'd like him even more.

I know this is thread praising Burnitz, and why not...not many of us wanted him in the offseason. IIRC he said he wasn't worried about the fans liking him, he seemed pretty confident that we would in the long run, and I love the guy. He truly is a gamer. One question I have about him though...have any of you noticed that when he runs his hands kind of flap up and down? He's got pretty decent speed, and I know we were always taught to run by "hammering the nail," or "dipping the chip" with our hands It just makes me wonder why he runs like that.

Yea I've noticed. He's got that kind of 'old man' sprint going for him when he's trying to score too. Someone needed to make up for Moises' departure I suppose.

Also I love Burnitz. Didn't have much of an opinion on the signing but I love his hustle and defense.

Ahhh, robbing Pujols of the HR in RF at St. Louis really comes to mind on that one.

That was nice. But where he has really made a difference is in cutting off balls in the gap, holding guys to singles, hitting the cutoff man with strong throws, etc.

He has really saved alot of runs this year.
