As of right now, the needs for this team is far more than Skubal.

Skubal would be the king of the rotation but will Imanaga Cabrera Boyd Brown Taillon be enough or good enough to hold up their end of it, or would they just be a combined toss up of what they might get from them the rest of way

They definitely need a middle of order run producing bat, they have a huge hole there with RISP. Likely spot to fill that hole would be DH.

They obviously could use help in the pen, they do have like 3-4 good arms,  1 or 2 more really good ones can go along way.

I dont know if Jed has what it takes to make these moves, if im correct,  I believe he likes to wait as long as possible before deciding on if he gonna pull the trigger on deals and mostly doesn't.

That don’t need to add to the line up. They need the players they have to play to their ability. They are not adding a middle of the line up bat. Skubal is exactly what they need. The problem is they might need more than him on the pitching side and/or even with him they still may not make it.

Tell me, where do we get a sure fire run producing middle of the line up bat that we know will produce with risp? How many have a better track record than Seiya, Bregman, Busch and Happ coming into this season? And if the guys who have better records how many are available?

Gray and Willllllllson LFG Jed

As much as I don’t think they need another bat, I wouldn’t be opposed to this. Willson would be nice. But not sure about his clubhouse presence. Wasn’t he supposed to be a bit of an A hole?

Doesn't matter what their track record was before the season,  what matters is how they have performed this season, which hasn't been all that great.

Who will be available come July, we'll see, will Jed add a bat, who knows, and yes the guys they have will most definitely need to pick it up , but you cant sit here today and say theyll be fine as is and dont need help.

Can that change over the next 6-8 weeks,  sure, they all can just flip a switch and start playing their asses off, but now, today, they need help if they dont.

I don't remember Willson being an a-hole to anyone but the other team.

I could be wrong. I know my season ticket rep loved the guy. But I thought he was a bit of a cancer in the clubhouse. I am pretty sure pitchers didn’t like throwing to him. But that wouldn’t be an issue here. Bottom line is the team is going to succeed mainly if the hitters they have play better and to their norms. Willson isn’t going to carry the team if they don’t start hitting. He would be a nice addition but the bigger need is pitching.

If the line up doesn’t start playing to their ability there isnt enough players they can add to help them. I don’t agree with past performance not mattering and only what they are doing now is what matters. Players typically perform to the back of their baseball card. That said, I can see one bat added for DH. They don’t have a definite starter there. But that’s about it. The team will score more runs, more as a result of players they already have playing to their capabilities than because they traded for some mystery big bat who will obviously come here and lead the team. They need pitching because even if their pitchers perform to the back of their baseball card that is not a very good staff.

I don't know about the highlighted part.  Putting a batter in the everyday lineup who has a .918 slug and an OPS of 160 and is on his way to a 6 WAR could go a long way in covering some of the black holes and slumps.

Unless they trade Shaw, I think they’ll roll with what they have. The Steele and Horton injuries, not to mention Cabreras blister which could linger all season is as close to a death sentence as there is.

Bregman and Swanson are the only 2 position players where there’s a possibility of a drop off from the back of their baseball cards due to their age. Can’t say for sure but won’t rule it out either. Bregman’s struggling to square anything up and it’s already June.

We all know Contreras isn’t that kind of hitter. He is doing it now for the Red Sox. How many runs do they score a game? And, again, can you tell me for certain he is going to be any better going forward than Busch, Bregman, Suzuki, Happ, PCA, Hoerner and even Swanson. He isn’t going to keep up .900 OPS. The Cubs have the players with similar and even better career numbers than Contreras. They can use his bat at DH. Not arguing that. But he isn’t the answer if the rest of the line up doesn’t start player to their abilities. If they do, with or without him, they will score a lot of runs. Pitching is needed way more.

Earlier you said that players typically play to the back of their baseball card, Contreras has .817 Slug, and OPS+ of 120, and an AVG WAR of 4.5 over 11 years.  He is outhitting those numbers this year, but you could still count on him adding a lot to this lineup everyday.

Where will the positive regression come from with this pitching staff? Blisters are always unpredictable, Taillon may or may not have anything left, Imanaga is always vulnerable to getting shelled if he misses his splitter by an inch, Boyd might help a little… But even when the offense starts clicking again, this great defense is only effective with balls hit in play, which is a problem when you have a pitching staff allowing 1.5 hr/9.

They may not be this bad but this isn’t exactly a slump to the degree of that 5-15 skid from the 2016 pitching staff.

This team isn’t gonna get fixed with a couple deadline moves. You’re gonna need a couple off seasons and good drafts to fix this team. I think something is fundamentally broken inside the clubhouse. The vibes don’t feel right with this team
