Alternatively, consider a sample size larger than periodic starts over 30 games

Do me a favor and go to baseball savant and press play on his percentile rankings.

I think its okay to consider his season as a whole because hes over 40. To expect anything near his career norms is foolish. Even last year there were a lot of things not to like

I know 40 is a number that ends in zero and so people make generalizations about it but it kinda changes the narrative when he was an above average hitter at ages 37, 38, and 39

Justin Turner's avg exit velo (percentile)

2021 - 79

2022- 65

2023- 51

2024 -16

So sure,  40 is a number,  but we're really arguing that he's due to buck this trend as one of the oldest players in baseball?

no one makes pejorative generalizations about baseball players physical abilities when they turn 20 or 30

I’m saying he’s fine as a backup first baseman getting the short end of a platoon because, even with those exit velocities, he was comfortably an above average hitter in a very large sample size of PAs last year (and also all those other years before that).

I assume Turner will not be around much longer. I wonder what we’re gonna do next. Do they promote MoBaller to back up Busch and occasionally catch to get a decent amount of AB’s? Kind of fun to think about

Top 5 position player in baseball?

I mean he entered today 3rd in the MLB in fWAR way behind Judge but just 0.1 behind Carroll
