I think the fans are the only ones with a problem with them.  The players are clearly agreeing to these deals when they don't have to.

I don't think it's going to be the players complaining, I think it's going to be all the "low revenue" teams complaining that it gives the big spending teams even more ability to outspend them. Now we know this is horsefeathers because those teams are choosing not to spend, but I fully expect it be a point of contention.

30 yearold Ty France is going to now take up catching? LOL. And some fan is trying to connect the Cubs to him to help our dire catching situation?

I mean aside from 7 or 8 weeks in 2024 we've been lac-o-catch but cmon ?

MLBTR had Sev signing for 3/$51m and Crowd Source had him at 3/$48m. Yea, pitching isn't cheap. Starting to see why Jed locked up Boyd early.

The question is how much this is the market and how much this is the "playing the next two years in a AAA park" tax.  It's certainly some of both.

Yep. If Severino signs this sort of deal what does Flaherty get? Eovaldi as well. And then we get into Burnes and Fried. Cubs need to trade for that next rotation piece. They are not going 3/4 years at $23+ annual for the non elite and also not doing 6/$160 for the elite.

Kikuchi to the Angels is a weird one. Makes little sense for either side. They're not winning anytime soon.

Why doesn't it make sense for Kikuchi?

This is probably a positive for Bellinger trade purposes.  It means only one of the Astros/Yankees can get an impact 3B (Bregman), and Bellinger's fit becomes that much cleaner.

SF could use a good CF too though.  Unless they have a prospect i don't know about?

They signed Jung Hoo Lee last year, he missed most of the season with injury.  Their corner OF is far from settled though.

I think even if he's a fit defensively Bellinger's a pretty horrific fit offensively in San Fran which is probably why we haven't seen any rumors.

O'Neil to Baltimore  3/49.5. One Cody replacement gone.

If Seiya moves to RF and they trade Bellinger and they use any combo of our Iowa prospects at DH (plus any other bench guy they may sign) they have a decent chance to find a path for those guys to get to the 110 wRC+ Bellinger is projected.  They do lose some defense in RF though.

They'd also have the option to trade for some cheap DH option.

Let's say the difference is 1-2 WAR in those scenarios.  They still save 27 million which can be used to upgrade elsewhere and the projected WAR on paper for those players will be well above 1-2 WAR.  So i understand why they're trying to ship Bellinger.

With Bellinger and Tucker done not sure this has any reverberations for us but still good to see the position player market might get moving finally

9:20pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that reliever Fernando Cruz and non-roster catcher Alex Jackson are headed back to New York.

9:19pm: The Reds are acquiring Jose Trevino from the Yankees, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Weird trade, as the Yankees have absolutely no depth at catcher. Alex Jackson sucks and probably will just be a 3rd/4th catcher in AAA.

Cruz is an interesting story though. He was drafted by the Royals in 2007 as a 3B/C. After a few years of mediocre results, they moved him to the mound. He got torched, then got released, then spent two years in the Cubs system, which I do not remember. Then he pitched in indy ball for the NJ Jackals for a few years and eventually made his way to the Reds and made his MLB debut at 32 and last year struck out 100 batters out of the Reds pen. 4.88 ERA but 3.05 FIP the last two years.

I didn’t need Goldy signing with the Yankees to confirm Rizzo is done. But what does this do to Bregman’s market? Are the Yankees still on him?

They have added Belli and Goldy, where does Rizzo play?

He isn’t going to play anywhere with the Yankees. . Why did you quote me with this comment. My point was I assumed Rizzo was done anyway, with the Yankees. I didn’t need Goldy signing with them to confirm it.

The Diamondbacks are acquiring first baseman Josh Naylor from the Guardians for right-hander Slade Cecconi and a Competitive Balance Round B draft pick, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Now that's an interesting deal. DBacks get their Walker replacement. Guardians supplement their staff. Wonder if that guards (pun intended) against a McKenzie Cubs trade!

Makes the Dbacks better.
