Breathing... that's his most dangerous mistake.

Come on. That is too harsh. I don't like Dusty managing the Cubs, but to suggest that it over the line.

I can't believe Dusty sent Holla up to bunt in the 9th inning. I'm sure Cedeno or Maddux are much better bunters than Holla.

He didn't have a choice. There was no other OF available to replace Hollandsworth in the OF, unless you want to put Ronny Cedeno at third and Macias in LF. Unfortunately the Cubs are playing with a short bench right now, and while you'll usually score with 1st and 2nd, none out, you can't just go for broke and have a terrible defensive setup if you don't score there.

Meaning, maybe, just maybe, that he shouldn't have brought Holla into the game in the first place. If you don't have enough confidence in Holla to hit, and that spot is due up 4th in the bottom of the 9th, maybe the slight defensive edge Holla would provide in a 1-run game isn't worth letting Dubois play 9 full innings for once in his Cub career.

Bringing Greg Maddux out in the eighth inning. With seven guys in the bullpen and Maddux having shown signs earlier of some control issues, I never would have sent him back out there.

I think Dusty may have fallen into a trap of trying to stretch his starters out. Greg isn't the same horse anymore that you can do that with. He was living on borrowed time out there. Not to mention the fact that there are seven freaking guys down in the bullpen playing rock/paper/scissors.

I'm sure plenty of people will disagree. But, I thought it was a mistake and an example of Dusty not recognizing the limitations of his players.

I agree...I was surprised to see Maddux go back out in the 8th...I thought it was great that he pitched 7 without much damage.

But...I think what killed them last night was Burnitz's at bat in the bottom of the 7th (?) when there were men on 1st and 3rd, one out, and he popped up on the first dang pitch he saw...I thought the game was over then...

I think that you're right on-point.

During the pre-game yesterday, Baker said that Cub hitters need to take some walks, or learn how (when) to take some walks (or something to that effect).

I almost fell out of my seat on the el when I heard that!

Having a bum like Jason Jennings face 29 Cubs hitters on only 87 pitches was a low point for the whole team except the pitchers. People have complained about the Cubs' free-swinging ways, but this game really stands out.

In another poor managerial move, Dusty failed to use his cat-like reflexes to dive in front of the line drive off of Prior's elbow. At this point, Baker should be doing everythng he can (including sacrificing his own body) to save his job.

In the pre-game the day of nomar's injury, dusty told santo that he wanted nomar to go deeper into the count. I was a bit surprised

And now the day Prior gets hurt he wants us to be more agressive at the plate.

You know, you can't win. On the one hand, every time he says it, someone gets hurt. But if he does nothing about it, people don't get hurt, but they play like crap.

Burntiz bunting?

Uhg. He didn't look comfortable at all, and made what turned out to be a pretty retched attempt.

Why not use Hairston, Maddux or Rusch to bunt Lee over if Baker really wanted to go that route? Perhaps even Wilson, though I don't know how adept he is at bunting. Hairston and Macias were still available to replace Burnitz in the OF if Baker PH for him.

In addition, its another example of the stupidity of a 12 man pitching staff. I don't care that we are in a stretch of 20 straight games. If you have to mix and match with guys in Iowa to replenish the pen, so be it. The fact of the matter is that some guys get used so infrequently in the pen that it is difficult to imagine how the pen can get depleted. Baker gets hooked on particular guys and goes with them. Fine. No problem. However, instead of letting some guys decay at the end of the pen, bring up Grieve or Kelton to provide greater late inning flexibility.

I'm in 100% agreement with you. I've been wanting to get away from this 12 man pitching staff for awhile.

Jennings is tough.

Just ask the Cardinals.

The whole game. There were too many to list individually.

Agreed. Dusty should have just stayed in bed today.

This game was replete with even more evidence of Dusty's strategic incompetence.

Why weren't both a lefty and a righty warming up when Zambrano took the mound in the 7th? Just Ohman was ready, and then when he sucked, no one was ready. He had to wait until the game was essentially lost to make a change. I guess it would not have mattered since Wuertz was equally as bad, but it just makes me mad that nobody (righty) was ready.
