Johnny Gaudreau and his brother were killed while riding bikes on a rural road in Nee Jersey (where they were for a family member’s wedding). They were stuck by a car.

Who were making room for the cyclists

Their sister was supposed to be getting married today?  Fvcking awful.

Drunk driving is a plague but I think many who do it actually try to drive carefully as to not get caught?  Sounds like this guy just got impatient and tried to pass on the right.  Hopefully he never experiences freedom again.

I don't have faith in the legal system to make it happen. Which sucks, because if you knowingly get behind the wheel after having been drinking, that should be straight up murder, not death by auto or whatever they are calling it. Yeah this drunk driver should spend the next quarter century plus behind bars but he's more likely to get less than 10.

Thoughts and prayers to the Gaudreau's family.

As we head into the Labor Day Weekend, just a reminder to be safe.

I had a similar thought.  Drunk driving by itself is bad enough regardless of how cautiously the person is trying to drive, but driving drunk AND recklessly at the same time is a recipe for disaster and should be punished accordingly.

This is an awful story.

I hate trying to make distinctions in levels of legal consequences for drunk driving... It lowers your judgement and inhibitions at the same time it's horsefeathers over your motor skills and reaction times, so you do stupid horsefeathers you normally wouldn't even do when you're sober. The punishment needs to be severe enough for ANYONE over the limit that it deters driving "cautiously" a little over the limit, because that breeds false confidence in the future and is exacerbated by the aforementioned impairment of judgement, leading to 90 in a 35, passing multiple cars at once on a 2 lane highway, etc

Absolutely devastated by the news this morning. Every drunk driving arrest should come with prison time and I say that as someone who has made that mistake in my younger years. Killing someone because of drunk driving should be life in prison. In the age of ride sharing programs especially it is an inexcusable offense.

What does this mean exactly?  Everyone should live in cities?

Yes. The need to drive 5 miles to get to anything is what leads to a lot of problems, including people thinking there’s a safe way to drive drunk.

I hate living in cities. I will never live in cities again.

Though most US cities are impossibly car-brained, too. There's no escape.
