Another draft thing seems to be more, nearly all, coverage going behind paywalls. Helluva future being built, great if you’re a fascist (tbf true in the past and present)

I know you don't even know what you're talking about anymore, but how is writers charging money to read their writing fascism?  And I know you're going to go straight to ESPN/Disney but they've been behind a paywall for over a a decade, so explain it to me in terms of mid size shops like Fangraphs/BP/Baseball America.

17. Cubs — Brandon Compton, OF, Arizona State

The next scout we talk to this spring who’s not glowing about Compton will be the first. He’s gotten tremendous reviews from the people we’ve spoken with. It sounds like his hit/power combo is far too good to last beyond the teens.

Scout Commentary: “He does have a track record of hitting in college. Definitely a corner guy. Have to hope he gets to that plus power for the value of that profile.”

I have a personal love/hate relationship with Liam Doyle. He is electric though. Funky lefty that can touch 99. He definitely has command issues and it gets him in real trouble against SEC teams. He blew away crappy competition and has now struggled with SEC competition. Same as last year at Ole Miss. I’m interested to follow his results this year.

Justin Lebron at Alabama is a guy to keep an eye on. Bat is elite. Not sure if he can stick at SS long term, but the bat plays.

Lebron is a 2026 guy. His bat looks special for SS, I really like him..

17. Cubs — Brandon Compton, OF, Arizona State

Writer: Peter

Rationale: I became enamored with Compton this past summer on the Cape, where he looked like one of the more advanced bats in the league. From this chair, he’s got an above-average hit tool to go along with comfortably-plus raw power that he has no issue getting to in-game. That hit-power blend was too enticing for me to pass up on.

Here's a name I'm starting to really like: SS, Wehiwa Aloy. I like the swing. He's been moving up boards. Coincidentally, BP just added him as a name they like a bunch as well. Great data on EV, and his patience. Probably a little too passive against the FB...but I like this one.

From the latest chat on Fangraphs:

Lord Thunder: If I remember right, you were pretty high on Wehiwa Aloy a few months ago. Is there still a chance of him going in the top 10?

12:55

Eric A Longenhagen: I think so. Power hitting shortstop who crushed the Cape.

He's #2 on the draft big board over at Fangraphs. I was a little surprised by how high Eric has Wehiwa Aloy ranked currently. When I talked to him last yr I brought up Aiva Arquette and we both really liked him and thought he had a chance to potentially go 1-1 if he took off in the spring. I think Arquette has a good chance to stick at SS (Eric was a little more skeptical) and hit for power eventually.

I prefer Aiva Arquette over Wehiwa Aloy, but both are premium draft prospects.

Oh damn. Well now I can't tell if by liking Aloy at #`17 I'm either pulling a "well yeah I'd love it if Ethan Holliday fell to the Cubs" kind of unrealistic thing or I'm getting in on the ground floor of a darling haha

BA Mock 2.0 dropped. They have the Cubs going with Luke Stevenson, C, UNC

I'm not fully sold that the Cubs would go Stevenson. There are some things that seem to check out - he plays up the middle (SS/2b/C/CF) which many of their picks at the top tend to play. He's a collegiate hitter, which has been a hallmark of Dan Kantrovitz picks since he's coupled with the Cubs. He has some pretty solid batted ball data, too. Probably the best college hitter at the position in the draft.

Where I am a little unclear of how the Cubs would view him is two fold - there's whiff in the profile. The Cubs tend to shy away from hitters with whiff questions. As well, Stevenson has not played in the Cape league - the Cubs tend to favor wood-bat performers. That may not immediately disqualify him from the Cubs boards, but things to note, at least.

Mason Morris at Ole Miss is a sleeper that should be getting 1st round consideration. Ole Miss hired Jake Mangrum from the Guardians to be their pitching coach and he’s gotten insane results out of Mason from last year to this year. They are using him as their bridge out of the bullpen on Friday nights. His last 3 weekends he’s thrown 12 innings, 0 runs, 20K’s, 2 walks, including 5 shutout innings and 8 K’s against #4 TN last Friday. He’s been incredible all year. By far the best pitcher on the Ole Miss staff. He holds upper 90’s velo deep into his pitch count with a sick cutter and a sweeper/slider.

Man, Devin Taylor has really shot up boards. Especially for a guy who profiles as a LF/1B/DH. The offensive profile is terrific though.
