Robert would be awesome, but I doubt they would want to trade him to us for a reasonable package.

They got any useful bullpen arms?

Kopech would be the headlining RP name, he hasn't been top of scale dominant but with that stuff and 1.5 years of control he'd still have a decent pricetag.

There's not a ton of great alternatives on the market so the Sox will get their price, but man with Crochet's lack of durability I'd be really scared to pay the price that his talent and current production demands.  But if you want someone who can potentially get Ohtani and Freeman out 3x in the same game you're not going to have a lot of alternatives.

You're probably right, but Steele's shockingly close to split neutral which is where my head's at.  Last year he got tagged pretty well by lefties with a .473 slug against.  It's probably a combo of some SSS and some selection bias (only star lefties are allowed to face him)?  But pending where Imanaga nets out with more playing time we don't have someone who is pure heat death on lefties like Crochet or Luzardo.

I'm being a bit cheeky, but to actually put words to my thoughts, I think that is a niche enough concern that if your two best starters are LH already(not to mention Wicks down-rotation), then it probably is not the biggest value add to chase further LHH dominance in a rotation acquisition.

Robert’s an underrated target IMO. Locked up,l through 29, 26, elite RH power, GG caliber defender, good speed and baserunning, some injuries but nothing too crazy, high ceiling

Who says no to like…

Cubs trade for: Luis Robert CF, Michael Kopech RHP

White Sox trade for: Pete Crow-Armstrong CF, Luis Vazquez, and Cristian Hernandez IF

??

The White Sox and by a lot. You'd probably have to add in another major piece like Caissie/Ballesteros/Alcantara

BBTV implies that proposal is a slight overpay, though they have Kopech has negative value and I would assume any trade for Robert will be at least a little irrational from a value perspective.  Still not so far off though, players like PCA simply don't get traded anymore unless they're also getting pre-arb quality in return(e.g. Varsho for Moreno).  More likely, I think you'd see like Alcantara and one of Ballesteros/Caissie as the primary pieces?

Wow, still 6 weeks to reach the deadline.

Cubs will be pushing up daisies long before the deadline if they hold out til the last day of July.

Why? Which of the 9 teams battling for 2 WC spots is going to run away with it? Why wouldn’t the  Cubs have a similar chance as any of the teams, all around the same record, to play well from now until the trade deadline. Or, maybe all continue to play around .500. I know people can point to all the problems with the Cubs. But since there are so many teams in a similar spot, doesn’t it stand to reason those teams have issues too?

Besides that, who is selling now? I can see the Marlins, Rockies, A’s, Angels and white sox. That is it. So right now prices would be very high.
Maybe you are right, the Cubs will be pushing up daisies by the deadline, if they wait. But if that’s the case, they would sell. And more likely than your scenerio is they will be in a similar spot at the deadline, as they are now. Maybe at that time there will be more sellers so prices will be lower and more players will be available. Sure, I would love to make moves now, but it takes two teams to make a deal. And I don’t see why any of the 5 teams that are obvious sellers would be in a hurry to make a deal unless it was way lopsided in their favor. And, IMO, the Cubs or any of the teams fighting for WC spots, are not in a position to make a lopsided trade to add a guy now. My guess is nothing happens anytime soon.

There is a lot more downside risk than I expect Jed to be comfortable with, but swapping Bellinger out and bringing in Robert and Crochet does a lot to bump up the ceiling on this team without requiring payrolls that we know Tom won't support.

You'd have ~$50M this offseason to address catcher, 3B. and relief.  That seems like plenty unless you are targeting Bregman?

Crochet says that he isn't going to pitch in the playoffs. The Cubs can trade Taillon and then go after crochet. He won't have to worry about playoffs there

Update after yesterday's games:

  • PCA: 1.9 WAR (303 PA)
  • Robert: 0.7 WAR (319 PA)

I like PCA better.

This is a weird vendetta. Can you guys just bets on 2025 fWAR, PCA v Robert and call it a day?

Even today RCal mentions Robert as a "big bat" that will be available in the offseason. My quest continues until all recognize the lack of wisdom in that pursuit.

I mean, there is a non zero chance Robert gets non tendered this offseason if they can't move him in a trade. What was once a very team friendly deal of 3/55 over the next 3 years, would be more than I'd give him if he hit FA this offseason.

He's on a contract through the end of next year, so he can't be non-tendered. He could be released, but they'd still be on the hook for his 2025 salary. They'll almost certainly keep him and hope he plays better in the first half so they can increase his value at next year's trade deadline.

In honor of PCA's day...Live picture after today's games according to Fangraphs Live Stats split:

  • PCA fWAR: 2.2 (and rising rapidly)
  • Robert fWAR: 0.5 (and dropping, I guess)

Yes, it's a weird vendetta. But it's also fun for me and it's been a long year. 🙂

This message board would be going crazy if we were watching PCA do, on the White Sox, what he has been doing here. He's just screaming perennial all-star level talent.

edit: Robert also sustained a hamstring injury last night

robert sucks and i can't believe we're wasting time talking about him. no plate discipline and can't stay healthy. No horsefeathers thank you. guys with that profile lose it in an offseason and fall immedialy off a cliff.

if he's viewed as being a salary dump then Robert is a near perfect trade target for us

the correct answer for addressing a need for an impact bat has always been to sign, or trade for proven studs like Harper/Seager/Correa/Soto/Vlad but given we're disinterested in that course of action we probably have to keep praying on Cody Bellinger grade buy-low reclamation bouncebacks which Robert is a pretty good candidate to be

and if Bellinger opts in push Busch to 2B and bid farewell to Nico, possibly fixing C in the process
