Not trying to be overly snarky, but what promises/who made them

Yeah, that was meant as just a figure of speech. Wondered when I wrote it if I should have edited my wording. But no, just the ascertaining that Counsell was a head and shoulders above the rest manger. To me, the variance between a good and bad manger isn’t terribly severe in baseball. I think coaching is much, much more important in the other major sports. Not trying to dump on Counsell either. I like him. Just never agreed with the idea that your marquee move of the offseason should be a manger.

Make it horsefeathers stop already. Seems like Counsell is basically punting this game by keeping Little in when he clearly has nothing. Tired pen and a day game tomorrow I suppose…

He's desperately trying to get innings, Hendricks shouldn't have been back out there either

Not saying Counsell hasn't made moves that have backfired, but Madrigal would be starting 4 games a week if Ross was still here.

And that’s probably true as well. I actually like his lineup construction. His bullpen moves puzzle me at times.

This was the inning to use Leiter. Gets lefties out at a high clip, much more reliable pitcher, potentially your highest leverage spot in the game.  I really don’t understand this horsefeathers from Counsell

They need to get 14 outs from the pen(maybe more like last night!) and Neris, Thompson, and Smyly are all probably down.  The best case scenario was leaving this inning with a 1 run lead, so pending an offensive explosion there's bound to be higher leverage situations later.  Gotta be able to use the whole pen.

Guys, we’re 10-6 with a ton of injuries, the pen is cooked, and Hendricks is not good. There’s literally not many moves CC could make there. If you can’t bring in Little when he’s rested and the only lefty available to face Joc, then why is he on the roster?

Yeah thank god CC is here to play the terrible defensive third baseman with a 691 OPS going into this game. Can you imagine where we would be without his leadership in this hypothetical comparison

Christopher morel has been worth -0.1 fWAR this year

How much has Busch been worth, because Ross would almost certainly have him splitting time with Cooper at 1B.

Are we just making up hypotheticals now to defend counsell

We are getting real-time confirmation that every manager will do things on a near-daily basis that you don't understand or agree with, and in response we are apparently getting pissed about bad decisions hypothetical David Ross would have made.

Somewhat, yes.  Ross and Counsell clearly have significantly different approaches to day-to-day lineup construction and I think we have seen the benefit of that with Busch getting such consistent playing time.

Well now there’s no more high leverage situations because the rookie with no control came in with the bases loaded and wildly allowed 4 runs to score with a series of wild pitches walks and hits. is it not at least somewhat like the concept of saving your closer for a save situation in extra innings on the road? You don’t have a save situation if the opponent scores off your crappier pitcher before the closer can be used. No guarantees there will be another bases loaded 1 out situation with the Cubs nursing a 1 run lead with a lefty due up again.

Of course you have to get outs and I get what he’s trying to balance between managing to win this game and managing to win long term and that because of that you are occasionally gonna have to bite the bullet and use a less reliable pitcher in a situation you don’t really want to, I just don’t understand that particular decision to use that particular pitcher in that spot.

"Hypothetical David Ross"

That would make a great user name.

To be clear, you are trying to compare two managers and as part of your argument you are just making up theoretical suboptimal decisions for the guy you are arguing against.
