He's played SS and LF as well. As I said originally, I don't think the Cubs control a daily lineup. But I also think it's pretty obvious he won't be playing much, if any, of those positions with the Cubs (he sucks in LF, Swanson and Hoerner would be ahead of him at SS). So I don't read much into him playing 3b. The interesting thing to me was always the quote from the Cubs that he was going to play 1b. That's clearly from the Cubs.

I still remain pretty unconvinced the Cubs feel he can play 3b. There will be little until the Cubs actually commit to him playing 3b that will change that at this stage. Maybe he will. I'll be glad to be wrong.

This is beginning to mirror the matt murton obsession from PSD days

So directed at me. That is fine. I also find it tiring that everyone assumes he won’t do it. As 1908 said let’s wait and see. But of course it can’t be left at that, or this would have never been posted.

A couple things:

NSBB had a significant Murton obsession, also.

I'm not convinced the door is closed to Morel at 3B this coming season. I'm sure Counsell will make up his own mind about that if Morel is still on the team. I think they'll want the bat in the game. If they sign Ohtani, I think they give Morel time at 3B.

We'll see.

Some very good memories on there.

And then the admin decides to give everyone a 4 day warning before they shut the place down for good lol.

Yeah man, Im still bitter about it to be honest. Many of us had been posting there for 15-20 years and stayed even when the site traffic went way down.

Can’t remember if you’re a hawks fan, but during the start of the Kane/Toews era that hawks forum was popping. A few years later it was a ghost town. But on the cubs forum we held on and held on and then they give us four days notice. Really shabby site. Yet, with the winter meetings coming I can’t help but still reminisce and miss it.

Yeah, definitely sucks. People simply weren’t given enough time to make plans with each other to join different forums, so most people would have just instantly lost contact. Especially if you didn’t hop on PSD in those last 4 days.

I only randomly searched for a Cubs forum a couple months ago and hit on with this place and spotted a bunch of familiar PSD names.

My first PSD board I jumped on was the Bulls board 2008-2013 and that was such a busy board. I went back on there only in the last year and it was still relatively active but nowhere near what it was. Going on the Cubs board only came later (2015). I only had a handful of posts on the Cubs board in the last 3-4 years but always went back to the place to check up on things so I definitely know it was always active. Now I am back full time, like I used to  so to be, so to speak.

I tried to become an all-Chicago sports fan. But the Hawks and Bears thing never stuck and I don’t know if I have watched a handful of games for either sport. So no, definitely not a Hawks fan. 😛

Do the Cardinals think they know something about this year's FA market?  I don't love any of their deals on paper, but maybe they identified an opportunity to strike early while many of the big players are waiting on the larger dominoes to fall.  I'm not convinced that it will work in their favor, but if somehow they find themselves in contention next year, their early FA activity could play a big part.  Obviously there is still a lot of off-season to play out, but it will be interesting to see how their moves grade out over time.

Glad you’re here! I always remember you being a very nice and good poster over there. Let’s hope we make some new memories in the next week 😁

I could not disagree more with this line of thinking.  This is the exact time to go after Ohtani.  From a baseball standpoint, and a business standpoint.  They are favorites at this very moment win the central.

The CBT means nothing this year.  You can count on getting close to 277 if they sign Ohtani.  It doesn't matter if you sign FA's first and then call up prospects or trade for major league players, or call them up and then sign FA's.  You can take it to the bank that they will be well over the threshold this year.  And pushing the 3rd level if they sign O.  They are dropping 75 million next season.  They will go over this year.  And by a lot.

Signing Ohtani is not going to limit anything in the future.  He will more than pay for his contact.

This seems overly optimistic.  I think it's extremely likely they go over the CBT if they sign Ohtani, but no guarantee they go over the CBT if they don't.

On the one hand, it's objectively hilarious that the Cardinals were like "we need more power arms" and then did this.  On the other hand it's not a bad rotation?  And Mozeliak handed out very few year.  And that's never stopped being a strong group of position players to go with it.

There's some age related risk on both sides of the ball, but they look like a wildcard team.  And they're the division favorites until Jed adds 10ish WAR.

Including Gray, their best players are getting old, almost all of them out of their prime years, plus Contreras will be 32 in May.  It's unlikely none of these old guys on the team don't age regress next year, and they need them not to in order to have a good chance.  They need Arenado, Goldschmidt, and Gray etc to have years they've put up in the past but I can't see them all doing that, not to mention the other old guys.

rumored price for Glasnow per Reds beat writer on mlb.com

What's your first offer? Mine would probably be Assad, I imagine they would counter with Ben Brown or Wicks

I don't think Glasnow is worth his 25m salary he'll make next year so I'd offer some terrible prospect nobody has ever heard of plus probably want them to throw in some money.

Yeah, the Cubs aren't on a "Ohtani or we're fucked" plan for the offseason, certainly.

Agree.  I think how much payroll the Cubs decide to spend to this offseason is more important than which quality players they decide to sign.  There's several very good players on the market they can target.  They'll all sign for their market value more or less so it doesn't matter a ton which of them we sign as long as they address a need of ours.

Speaking of Morel, did you notice he played 3rd in the DR the other day. Wonder if the Cubs told them to play him there? Until the Cubs close the door on him at 3rd I am not giving up the hope they play him there.

If I were the Cubs i'd definitely want Morel playing mostly 3B this winter with the occasional 1B and middle INF.

Anyone remember the message board on Cubs.com?  That was probably back in the Julio Zuletta/Mark Bellhorn obsession days.

I can also remember posting on some other baseball message board back around 2001, and when the 9/11 attacks happened one of the regular posters there worked in the WTC and died in the attacks.

I'm not big into Reddit so glad private forums like this still exist even if they've taken a hit in traffic from Reddit and Twitter.

It may be, but they will struggle to be any more than they were last year if they don't go to the 2nd level.  And if O's in the mix, they have to go to the 3rd level.  This isn't going to happen but if Stroman and Belli both came back, it would cost them 40-45 million, and they are the same team.   They have a lot of holes to fill.  I know that they ALL shouldn't be filled in the FA market, but this is the year when they have to  sign star players.  Especially with young, cheap player knocking at the door.

Morel to somehow manage to figure out how to be an average third baseman would be such a shot in the arm!  That's the ideal situation over there.

The Cubs, or any other MLB reportedly have noe say so what the DR teams do in this league.  I guess the team can request something, but it's now clear that they do what they want.  The Cubs supposedly wanted him at 1B, and the "rumor" was, "Morel to play 1B during winter ball."  Well it's not happening.  Just last week he's played, SS, LF, 1B, 3B.  They are clearly playing him where they need him each day.

But I digress.  The best thing for the Cubs is if he can play 3B.  But by playing a guy that's never played the position before ahead of Morel, who has logged almost 1500 innings there, seems like they gave up on the idea.  Maybe the idea of Morel at 3B can be resurrected?

Yeah,  I believe Tim,  who created and used to run this site, was SanClementeFan back on the Cubs.com board.  Personally,  I was obsessed with Juan Cruz back then.  To this day,  I've never seen a fastball move like that.

Cubs.com pretty much died when someone staged a fake death of one of the members. A few months later, Tim created this place. At least that's kinda how I remember it.

So what you are saying is you don’t want him. They aren’t getting him for a terrible prospect.
BTW, what do you think he is worth? Why is money so important if they are only going to have him for one year? If he is healthy he is a very good pitcher. And a type they don’t have now. Someone who misses bats. What does he have to do to be “worth $25M?
