This is a special kind of collapse they're pulling off. By the way Jed, maybe next time a pen arm at the deadline.

I said it after the clock struck zero... what was the point of that deadline?

We virtually did nothing at the deadline. Hoyer sat out on a really good sellers market and avoided buying to make a legitimate push for a playoff run when the main reasons this team is even looking at potentially backing into the playoffs is because the NL is all around mediocre, minus 2 teams, and surprise revivals of guys that wont be around next year. We closed our eyes and crossed our fingers for the chance to say, "Hey look! We made it!"

You might have answered your own question. Perhaps he didn't feel it was worth giving up the assets to improve a team that is in for another rebuild next year? If he didn't think Stroman/Bellinger would be back, if he saw that Patrick Wisdom wasn't a viable piece moving forward, if he thought that PCA/Mervis/etc. were more than a year away, perhaps he just punted

When is he going to stop planning a rebuild before he gets punted himself?

He's built himself a 3 year window before everyone but Swanson is looking for a new contract. Why would he still be kicking the can down the road at this point? If he's still rebuilding then he doesnt have a damn clue what he's doing because by the time he's done "building" a tornado is coming through to tear the bitch down again.

I don't really see any reason why you'd think we're in for another rebuilding year next year. Stroman and Bellinger leaving frees up Stroman and Bellinger money, Hendricks frees up some more, Heyward finally comes off the books. Yeah we're looking at salary bumps for Ian, Dansby, and Hoerner (none of which are overpays), but don't think we're just going to sit on our hands. Quick glance at Cots shows us with $50ish million in salaries to give out for next year while still being able to stay under the threshold.

I think at the deadline the team was still hovering under .500, possibly under, and was still 4-5 games out. I get the desire to go hard in either direction, and I was definitely confused as to why we didn’t at least get a veteran reliever but even if the team was playing well and their metrics showed they are a good team do you really think they should have traded real prospect capital for a .500 team that needed to jump 4 other teams and make up 4 games in the standings to even be in the playoff picture?  Especially when the Braves and Dodgers are absolutely juggernauts. I think there should have been one more move but I was happy with getting the best bat traded during the deadline and simply not selling

Fwiw with Hendricks the beat writers lately have been talking about Hendricks coming back as a foregone conclusion. Not sure if that’s just speculation, not sure if that means picking up the option or declining it and re-signing him to a smaller amount but sounds like both sides want to keep it going. We’ll see

I'm fine with that, think he brings a lot of unique value and most likely 150 quality back end of the rotation innings at around or below market rates. Plus he's just awesome so another point for that.

He almost has to. Without him all you've got is Steele. Smyly and Taillon are huge question marks, Stroman is likely gone. Assad has a great ERA but horrible peripherals. Wesneski has no ability at all to get lefties out and Thompson is still broken. You'd be going into FA with Steele as your #1 and Wicks as your #2. Horton will likely be on the team in 2024, but not right away and will certainly be on an innings limit.
