No reason to pull Wesneski after 2 innings, he was pitching well and could of gone 1 more...

Only one more?  He's a starter.  Apparently Ross has fallen in love with the idea of an opener for Smyly, even when that opener is capable of going much longer.

Nobody knows why. I have no problem with piggybacking Smyly, but Wesneski was pitching well and should have been allowed to go through the order a second time.

Lars Nootbar loves this Cubs opener crap.

Homered to lead off the game against both openers (Fulmer and Wes), and then greeted Smyly with a double when he entered last game and another HR tonight

I think the idea of an opener can be useful, but I don't understand what the purpose is here.  Wesneski is someone who struggles against LHP, so is the idea that the Cardinals load up LHH and then tee off on Wesneski?  Is the idea that maybe Wesneski can survive a full trip and then you'll have so many lefties that Smyly will be more effective?  Smyly's been better against LHP, but still carries a weak 4.47 xFIP (or did before Nootbaar's homerun).  I simply don't understand the idea here.  Smyly's been pretty bad this year, so what's the purpose of him being the longer-man?  It feels backwards.  Feels like you force the Cardinals to go RHH heavy for the first few hitters, and then put Wesneski in after an inning.

I'm just so confused.

Funny thing is the Cardinals only put 2 lefties in the lineup, albeit 2 in the first 3 hitters. But it didn’t really do much. Would have rather Smyly started and gone 2 times through the order and then Wesneski piggybacking him. If you do it that way you can use Wesneski for as long as you need him for.

I agree with you, my thing was he could of gone at least 1 more and continued as long as he was pitching well.  No reason Smyly couldn't come in the 5th, 6th, or 7th if Wesneski was shutting them down.
