Hunter Greene v Justin Steele

1:20 PM on Marquee or MLBTV if you're not in Chicago, or Bally Ohio if you're in the 'nati area

One or both of these teams will occupy last place in the division by Sunday evening. Hooray.

No Seiya

Not suggesting he shouldn’t be in the lineup, but doesn’t he struggle against velocity pitchers?

Pleasantly surprised with Mervis's defensive work on infield throws

Not a great day, however, for anyone else's defense

When Tucker Barnhart starts, the cubs have 6 wins. The others have 16 at the moment. Ross loves a backup but you have to start asking why can't we win with Tucker calling the game??

DFA time. He has two gold gloves but they don't measure how you call a game either. Cubs pitchers dont use a pitchcom to call their own games either. Gomes hit the IL and everything statted to spiral. Might be coincidence but the stats say Tucker starting leads to Ls.

Why is he starting so often though.  I believe he just started 2 nights ago.  Guessing the day after night thing but horsefeathers if he's going to be the backup catcher he should start once every 5 games or so.  If we need a backup catcher more DFA him and bring up Amaya.

I’m not mad at Hoyer for being picky about the kind of velo they bring to the rotation, it’s common and cheap enough that makes sense, but Jdang is this dumb window in time also a frustrating one. It’s easy to see, watching Steele and Hendricks do alright enough, how velo would really benefit the staff

I get the thinking here, but at the same time the two Cubs starters who rank(or would rank given IP) in the Top 50 of qualified SP in velo are Taillon and Wesneski, the two objectively worst performers.  Over a third of SP who are averaging 95+ have an ERA over 4, and at most 3 of them were reasonably available this offseason.  It's not the singular sign of success but teams know it helps and they hoard it.

Welcome!

19 game sample sizes are extremely random, so we can't really conclude much based on the team's results.  Even then, the Cubs are giving up 4.37 runs per game when Barnhart starts, and 4.33 when he doesn't.  The offense is averaging 2.4 runs per game when Barnhart starts, and 6.2 runs per game when he doesn't.  He's clearly not doing a ton offensively but I don't think he's the primary cause there.

I assume the same about the day night games. I have no idea what he brings to the table that we couldn't replace with a farm system catcher from any level.

It's actually 5.

5-14 when he starts. Amaya 1-3, Gomes 16-10.
