Can someone explain how the whole NHL draft/contract process works?  What happens when a player goes to college, or plays for another organization after being drafted?  Is there a difference in signing a player to an NHL contract versus an AHL contract?  In the case where a player goes to college, does the drafting team maintain that players' rights for a certain amount of time?  I guess I was naive to the ways of hockey, but until recently I always thoughts guys just went from the draft to AHL to NHL.

I’m not going to get this entirely correct. But, generally speaking you have 3 years to sign a guy after drafting him. Draft eligibility is all about birth year. Lots of times guys who are drafted go to college for a year or two then sign. Youth/junior hockey is extremely convoluted and weird and varies between usa and Canada. But only the top guys sign and play right away at 18.

Rocky Wirtz dead

Complicated legacy.  Maybe complicated is the wrong term. Completely overhauled a dying hockey franchise and revitalized the fanbase. But cannot overlook his role in the off the ice issues that marred the Hawks 3 Cups. Ultimately that cover up and his annoyed response about being done talking about it will be his legacy

Do the Lightning just magically have twice as much cap space as every other team? They have a roster full of All-Stars and just keep signing guys to huge deals

For this one, they finally get rid of Brent Seabrook's (yes seriously) LTIR hold of $6.875m after this season.  Hagel's extension starts after this year so it fits right in.

It's amazing how good some GM's are with the cap. The CBJ are always the youngest team in the league, but when they want more than one star player, it feels like they are trading guys away to afford it. Tampa runs four lines deep, is in the playoffs/SCF every year, and they just keep adding and adding

the CBJ GM sounds like he's good too, good at selling the cap issue as a limiter when it doesn't need to be
