You don't think years-long "look the other way" behavior that puts student athletes at risk deserves some sort of department sanction? Do you think the AD should lose their job?

Maybe he should, but I don't think the NCAA is the entity qualified to make that decision.

I would think a Penn State fan of all people would agree that when the NCAA appoints itself judge and jury over a matter they're not remotely equipped to handle it ends up looking bad for all involved.

Derwood is in the misery loves company camp.

NU is going to get served with multiple lawsuits and perhaps a class action suit in the very near future so the players will get some form of justice. The university is tarnished already and stuff trickling out can only make it worse. If the NCAA wants to do anything, it should provide assistance to the university on how to get themselves out of the mess they created. This should include a slew of firings up to and maybe including the university President. That should work better than limiting scholarships.

Nah, this has nothing to do with what happened to PSU.

Why? I don't understand why every bad thing that happens in a college sports program needs to be addressed with pointless things like scholarship losses. The NCAA is not a crime-solving organization, this is not an NCAA rules issue, and the only people hurt by scholarship losses are whichever 18-year-olds don't get a football scholarship as a result of them.

Are you sure the ncaa doesn’t have anti hazing rules? I don’t disagree with your point, but it does seem like they may have something on the books that cover this issue

I think the NCAA should step in if Northwestern doesn't clean house and set up a plan to make sure this doesn't occur again in the future, but we all know this is an incestuous organization and nobody will really enforce anything and it'll just be window dressing to appease the public and rehab their image.

I'm definitely not sure they don't have anti-hazing rules, that's fair. And they probably should.

The NCAA didn’t step in when a player died of heat stroke at Maryland in 2018 with accusations of a toxic culture and unsafe practices.

It was somewhat similar to NW, where the university did an investigation, suspended Durkin for awhile and then reinstated him, causing an uproar with some players walking out in protest.  They then fired him the day after announcing he was reinstated.

The NCAA hasn’t had effective rules enforcement for a couple decades, but even when it did, it was monitoring whether schools bought recruits a pizza or a pair of sneakers, and not whether schools were mistreating their players.

As the resident Michigan fan I'll homer it up and point out that JH is getting suspended 4 games for buying recruits burgers during a dead period and misleading investigators about it.

Urban Meyer knowingly employed a domestic abuser for years, swept it under the rug while the abuse continued and was suspended 3 games.

JH is absolutely in the wrong and misleading investigators is stupid and disappointing but why in the age of NIL do we care about when a burger was purchased for a recruit?  Blah blah blah equal playing field...with all the shady horsefeathers going on with regards to NIL these days (like pushing players to enter the transfer portal by dangling a bag etc) its just funny.

In “maybe only interesting to me” news, Illinois hired former Wisconsin DC and interim HC Jim Leonhard as a defensive analyst, a job for which he is immensely over-qualified.

Apparently he had hip surgery in the off-season and took himself out of the running for the Eagles’ DC job.

He’ll be a nice mentor and second pair of eyes for Illinois’ first time DC who just got promoted from DB coach. I suspect Leonhard will be on his way to bigger and better things next season.

I think it’s pretty clear he’s getting suspended for lying to the investigators. The underlying offenses are so piddly that I can’t imagine he’d have gotten more than a slap on the wrist if he’d come clean from the start.

I agree with that.  Urban had a duty to report DV accusations to his athletic department and didn't, kept him on the staff for years and then rehired him at OSU while more reports of his abuse came in.

Harbaugh lied about when he bought recruits burgers because he thought it was stupid that there are dead periods where he cant buy kids who are visiting campus lunch whenever he wanted to.  I'm not saying he shouldn't get punished or absolving him of lying, but there are numerous examples of issues around domestic violence being treated less severely than less harmful issues (for example Watson getting 11 games for 30+ credible accusations vs. Ridley getting an entire season for making a $1,500 bet)

Weren't these violations committed during a pandemic-induced dead period? Not that that really makes them any worse, I guess, but it at least makes them less responsible. Part of what Tennessee got dinged for was that they (far more flagrantly than Michigan) were doing recruiting stuff during COVID dead periods.

Also seeing rumors on twitter that there is another Pac-Whatever team strongly considering a move, a "non-4 corners state" school so basically Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford or Cal.  Not sure if they are also targeting Big 12 or another school

Pac12 might actually survive!

I for one am quietly awaiting a scenario where the Big Ten invites 4 more teams (let's say, Oregon, Washington, ND and Clemson just to round it all out to 20), then splits into two divisions, the Big Ten and the Pac Ten.

Nah - the conference is still the "Big 10", but the divisions are the "Atlantic 10" or "A-10" and the "Pac 10"

I'm sure the still existing Atlantic 10 would not be too thrilled.  Lets give them dorky names like...legends and leaders
