5/75 seems pretty reasonable in this market. I'm reminded of the Fangraphs interview over the summer with a player who played in NPB who said he thought Senga was a reliever, wonder if the evals weren't as strong league wide as it seemed.

$15m aav seems reasonable, but they’re really paying like $24m if I’m understanding the luxury tax penalties, at least for next year

I think it might actually be more than that, like 28.5. They'll be repeat offenders(30% tax rate) and Roster resource has them in the 60% surcharge bracket(> 60M over the LT line), so at this point every dollar of AAV costs them $1.90 if I'm interpreting the surcharge right.

Ironic that in an offseason of SPs getting way more than expected the guy with a huge variance in opinions got exactly what MLBTR predicted.

Really curious what Jed's got up his sleeve for the rotation. Someone we haven't talked about much is Eovaldi. His contract likely ends up pretty modest because of the qualifying offer. Wonder if Jed has the stomach to sign two QO guys, the second basically just cancels out the pick we get for Willson I believe.

I definitely can't see the Cubs matching what the Yankees are likely to give Rodon. (7 years).

The 2014 third-overall pick is seeking at least a seven-year contract, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Thursday, though the Yankees would like to keep him to a four- or five-year deal at most, according to The Post’s Jon Heyman

Offer him 6 and go from there. At some point, they're going to have to overpay.

But we'll give Swanson 8 years?

I don't want to even hypothetically defend the Cubs but...

You're implying they're similar in age, position, and injury history, which is incorrect on all 3.

I totally understand those points, but my point is that they seem willing to go to 8 years for a SS that that is a slight improvement over the current SS.

Over Nico sure. Over Madrigal/Morel is a bigger improvement.

Trust me... I agree that they need quality over quantity but seem to be unwilling to acquire true elite talent again.

I submit a fellow former #1 overall pick coming off a ~6+ WAR season with 25 HRs in a diminished offensive environment (60+ over the past 3) at SS is a true elite talent…The narrative around his FA is not so different from the questions players like Adrian Beltre (coming off his monster breakout season) and DJ LeMahiu faced the first time they entered FA

True but they have yet to sign him.

If Swanson continues to do what he did last year, then sure, he's a true elite talent. But we're basing that off one year when his previous 6 were nothing close to this. There's been too many big contract year busts for me to put too much stock in his one good year.

Beltre in any of his five years in Seattle didn't get within 4 or 5 WAR (depending on which site you use) of what he put up in his contract year in LA so maybe not the best comparison to use there. LeMahieu had one good year in Colorado and I'm not sure anyone saw him doing what he did in 2019 or 2020 for the Yankees.

I didn’t say Beltre was bad in Seattle. Just that his performance in Seattle didn’t come close to his contract year. If last year was a fluke and Swanson reverts back to what he was up until 2022, then paying him 8/$200M or whatever it would be turns out to be a bad idea. And pre-2022 Swanson isn’t close to an elite talent.

If you’re worried about not getting a great players best years only, then just be the A’s and sell every 18 months

That’s not what I’m worried about.

Who cares what they pay him, it's not my money. And if this ownership group has any hope of placating the fan base and keeping them spending money on the team they damn well better keep spending money. As has been said, even if he puts up 4 WAR for the next 4 years, that's a nearly 4 WAR upgrade over the garbage they've had at 2B recently and that's nothing to sneeze at.
