Less than a top 5 payroll. Last year are 220 million.

I know where you're going to go with your response, but the 6th highest payroll is not a "low payroll" taking advantage of labor.

What do you want? Some kind of [expletive] number where they look like their trying? They were 14 last year. They have the 2nd highest ticket prices, the highest food prices, and were 9th in attendance this year, with a horsefeathers team for half the season. They have concerts, a hotel, apartments, and a TV network, and soon part owners of a betting house. What do you expect them to pay for a competitive team? Anything less than a top 5 payroll is low.

lol - you made a ridiculously hyperbolic statement and I called you on it. Lighten up my friend, it's a long offseason.

They don't control if they have a Top 5 payroll.

They don't?

No, they don't. Regardless of what the spend, any number of teams can spend more. They could have a payroll with a luxury tax and, theoretically, a dozen teams or more could still spend more than them. I get your point, as being in the neighborhood of Top 5 means their payroll will be high. They just don't control the place standing. Maybe stating a percentage of the salary cap would be a better measure.

I mean, they easily could control having a top-5 payroll if they really wanted to.

hopefully he can look past our 73 wins and see that we're in pretty good shape and we play in a bad division

He looked past the Twins winning 73 games last year so think we’re okay.

horsefeathering sick freak just loves being on 73-win teams, absolute madness

The Twins opened up their offseason by extending an oft injured but org drafted/signed star. The Cubs, at least according to the various sauces out there, plan to open up by dumping a(nother) star player to save The Future and get another Jeremiah Estrada or whatever

Signing/staying with a team because they extended a guy to a stupid long term deal who can’t stay on the field for more than 2 seconds and is a .240/.300/.470 slash line player with a 30% K rate is certainly a selling point.

Signing with a 73 win team worked out pretty well for Jon Lester.

I’ll put this (gem) in the Winning in 2023 thread since this is about winning Future games

I’m going the other way on the Correa clip: he said nothing new (-ish even) outside of maybe barrel%, which yeah sure that’s one. wOBA and wRC+ have been mainstream stats for close to a decade now, plate discipline in a general sense even longer

sure but ed howard says it and you're goo-goo ga ga

sure but ed howard says basic horsefeathers and then you give him all the money in this career and the next

Jed hates the long term contracts but if there's any player that's worth forking over an 8+ year deal (outside of buying arbitration years) its probably Ohtani right?

Yeah I wouldn't worry about that. Superstars are going to get their years. Like Andrew Friedman essentially invented the "no long term contracts" philosophy and even he caved in and offered up 12 years when it was Mookie Betts on the line.

My guess for how Jed's hatred of long term deal manifests this winter is A) only one or two deals longer than two years and B) he'll swap some AAV for extra years where he can (e.g. preferring 8/$280M over 10/$300M).

The 4 remaining playoff teams are....

1, 5, 9, and 11 in overall average (4S) fastball velocity (Cubs are 30)

2, 6, 13, and 18 in average 4S velocity from SPs (Cubs are 30)

5, 7, 8, and 11 in OBP (Cubs are 17)

5, 8, 14, and 15 in offensive GB% (Cubs are 28)

1, 8, 13, and 16 in offensive FB% (Cubs are 28)

2, 3, 6, and 29 by OAA on defense (Cubs are 27)

Note the Astros and Yankees lead all of these, well Padres are 3 for defense, and are correctly considered the best two teams

Also note all the elite and power SP talent!

The four teams playing for the World Series are good, and the 2022 Cubs are not good. Got it.

deGrom for 3 years you might be able to get. You're going to have to pay a hefty premium to get Judge for 5 years IMO.

But horsefeathers it lets do it all!
