Frazier now 4 for 8 with a 2B and 5 BB since coming off the DL, it's against 4 straight LH SP but I'm still intrigued

He's up to a 124 wRC+ as of now.

Not watching, but I assume Willson getting HBP in the ankle and coming out is more of a "holy horsefeathers this hurts" deal rather than a "something is broken" deal right?

Record since the proclamation that the Cubs will win the division: 3-0

Boy are we all going to have egg on our faces.

Crazy thoughts going through my head like “what if OP is a time traveler and he used his powers to reveal this information to a smallish group of jaded Cubs fans”

They've actually looked like a real baseball team since the AZ series (outside of the last Cinci game and Madrigal). Maybe Frank really wasn't fully recovered from the back thing and Morel has certainly injected a burst of energy into them.

Which makes their play before this stretch look even worse. Despite some decent play recently, they are closer to the worst record in the league (5 games back) than the division lead (10 games back)

It's just regression to the mean. They aren't as bad as then and they aren't as good as now. They are a 70ish win team with micro bursts of awful and great. It doesn't look worse or better when viewed from a distance.

It's possible that's true, but they're at a 70 win pace now and have had to deal with an abnormal amount of injuries and would have 3 more wins(a 79 win pace) with neutral one run luck. The only significant overperformance I can see that's lasted longer than 2 weeks worth of games has been Willson and Thompson, and those have been plenty balanced out by several disappointments so I'm not sure I see anything unsustainable happening. The schedule doesn't appear to have been extra kind to them nor does the rest of this month look particularly daunting. I think there's a plenty reasonable argument for this being a ~78 win team give or take a few, which is of course not the end goal, but a lot closer to the platform that you would hope this season would be back in March.

This is a .500 team if they are able to play as designed in a perfect world. Madrigal is supposed to be a .300 hitter. Nico wasn’t supposed to miss 2 weeks after an umpire ran into him. A healthy Miley gives us 2 or 3 more wins. We might have another win somewhere along the way if Robo umps existed and Suzuki was actually rewarded for having such a good eye. Maybe we have an extra win if Stroman doesn’t get Covid.

As designed, this team isn’t bad and it isn’t ugly to watch, but even their absolute peak ceiling still doesn’t make them a playoff team.

If counting on Nico to not miss games due to injury is part of your plan, you're doing it wrong.

just wasn't expecting him to miss time due to a freaking umpire running into him.

lol ya i know, but i mean, dude hit .361 in 612 AB's in college, .307 in 635 minor league AB's, and hit .317 in 300+ AB's in MLB before coming to the Cubs.
