I like this a lot. Martin has good stuff and throws a TON of strikes. That said, these guys always walk a fine line. When your velo is at 94-96, you can throw 60% of your pitches in the zone. When you start living at more like 93 you're suddenly latter day Bob Howry. That hasn't happened to Martin yet, but at 36 years old it's coming someday soon.

I don't see the pun in this post. Disallowed.

Bryan Smith pointed out on Twitter that he leaned on his (less effective) 4 seamer compared to his sinker, so the Cubs might try to do the up in the zone sinker bit with him. He could also get back to throwing more/better sliders, since his usage and effectiveness with it dropped last year(and contributed to the drop in K's). On a 1 year deal and given he has the multi-fastball arsenal, I'm less worried about a velo dip than I am injury. That's a worry for everyone but he had a shoulder and an elbow concern last year, and I wonder if that's part of the drop in slider usage.

When Martin was available during a recent deadline I remember him being a popular target. Think there’s some underlying spin or movement stuff that some teams/sequencing can unlock some stuff/extend his career. I know he’s been plenty successful as is but the lab might be able to maximize things.
