yea, that was above and beyond. even my wife (who hates all things sports and especially football) raised her head and eloquently made your point by saying something like "this is why I hate football, these announcers sound like they live in Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers is a lying piece of horsefeathers"

For the record, whenever anyone has "horsefeathers" in a quote, I like to really imagine the person (your wife in this case) actually using the word horsefeathers. Makes every post funnier.

I'll introduce "horsefeathers" to her tonight

Can you imagine, if for whatever reason, the Bears keep Nagy and he gets to face that schedule next year? If he pulled off that 9-8 he's almost definitely going be around for 2023 too.

Does anyone know if roughing the passer has been called when Justin Fields has played? I know, the coaching isn't doing him any favors and is responsible for quite a bit of the hits he's taken. However, it appears to me he's taking a lot of abuse several seconds after he's released the ball also, that horsefeathers GB NG was allowed grab him around the neck/head with no call. It's getting out of hand, better play calling, would help to if the officials were actually consistent with their calls.

There were several plays sunday night where the GB defender took 2-3 steps as Fields was releasing the ball and still hit/tackled him. I'm used to it by now, but it seems like the refs let opposing D's tee off on him

I guess in the NFL you have to survive long enough as a QB to start getting the calls. Until then, the risk of a career-limiting injury is way higher. That's how it seems anyway.

There's a theory that many of these calls are mobile/immobile related. Mobile QBs universally believe that they don't get the calls that the pocket guys get. Cam Newton has always complained about it, and still isn't getting the calls at his veteran age. But the mobile QBs not getting roughing call thing leads to the potential of racially motivated calls, which I'm sure the league isn't ready to admit. I wonder if there's a statistic for how many roughing calls each QB has gotten. I'd be interested to see how guys like Herbert, Allen, and Mayfield compare to Lamar, Kyler and others.

Here you go:

https://www.nflpenalties.com/roughing-the-passer-by-qb.php?

Strangely though, while it is counting up 2021 penalties, none of the rookie QBs are being tracked. But you can see who is getting the higher percentage of calls

Edit: I guess there is a minimum qualifier in there of 40 starts

Double edit: Some reddit dude did some analysis of the numbers:

this is a deeply flawed analysis. It inst "quarterback type x versus quarterback type Y", its "Chicago's QB vs GB's QB". ONLY MY TEAMS is in full effect!

Anyone else read the Wiederer piece today?

Nah, can't get past the paywall

I paid 1.20 for a 12 week trial and found it worth the 1. 20. It was a deeply sourced article.

Yeah but I can get like 1/3 of a gallon of gas with that $1.20 instead!

Saw some discussion about this yesterday but its summed up well here

Also, Jaylen did terrific matched up on Adams on Sunday:

Think I saw something regarding the myth of halftime adjustments in the NFL, this is an obvious example that they do occur and can be impactful. As a DC I certainly would have realized Johnson is shutting Adams down and the Packers are going to make some adjustments to get him away from that match up. What are the possibilities and how do we react in such circumstances? Such thoughts seem plausible for every team save of course, for our Bears.

To be fair, the Bears did have Johnson following Adams around the first time they played. Johnson was similarly good on the outside and got beat pretty handily in the slot. But IDC if you have to change your whole defense, you can't let DeVante Adams roam all over the field and face man coverage with Xavier Crawford, or LBs or a safety. If he beats Johnson (joke here) from the slot, then so be it. Get beat with your best on their best.

yea. Its puzzling why the Bears didnt just play spy with Adams/Johnson.

Not only did they not make adjustments but the head coach didn't even realize they made adjustments when asked after the game. I guess you could say the question was about halftime adjustments, and technically the Packers started moving him around in the 2nd quarter but still.

Its literally like an 11 part article. Tough to quickly synopsis, but it probably has about 6+ named people providing quotes (none of them provide anyhting mind breaking, but pretty big names, Fencik, Mannely, Kreutz, Dungy) and several unnamed sources providing background info on Pace and Phillips.

Biggest bombshell is Phillips has privately discussed distancing himself from Football Ops fully.

I read the highlighted part this morning as well, but dif article. However, I didnt know Dungy was connected to the Bears, at all. How is that so?

They got Dungy on record just talking about the Bears org pretty broadly and the current team construction. Like I said it's well sourced so he got lots of Bears outsiders to contribute, though many off the record.

So I've been on a mission to mock all the President of Football Ops proposals I see thrown around, and after some discourse I think I finally have the most concise way to express my issue with most of these plans.

In any well run business a leader needs KPIs that track their performance. In a very general sense, the typical NFL KPIs are probably,

Pres/CEO - Revenue, profit

GM/HC - Wins, perhaps playoff success

In a new power structure, what is the main KPI of President of Football Ops? Thats the critical question I would have. I think it's very difficult to create responsibilities and incentives around these roles that make sense and aren't either just title creep or ignore any business component. And due to NFLs inherent interest in anti-tampering and Rooney rules, there is really tight coalescing around the football role responsibilities too.

Does this make sense?

IIRC, in the first meeting JJ followed Adams to the slot and didn't have the same success as he did on the outside. Slot corner is talked about like a different position and I can see how it would be. JJ appears to be best as a boundary corner. Someone with more in depth football knowledge than me might be able to explain why beyond just being in the middle of the field.
