Because he’s getting paid a metric ton and wants to win a title. He wasn’t accomplishing either by staying at ND.

The sucky thing about all this is that it's going to give credence to the idea that ND can't win a title at all. I agree, and have for years, that ND was never winning a title with Brian Kelly. I do think there's a difference.

Just to name one very recent example, Michigan just straight-up punked Ohio State with a roster that isn't appreciably more talented than Notre Dame's is, at least by recruiting rankings.

If they want a better chance to win a championship, they should join a conference. Like, for reals this time. If they joined the big 10 with a condition being that they get put in the west, they'd have a good shot to be in the title game nearly every year.

I know, I know...traditions, blah blah blah.

Notre Dame beat two of the best 3 teams in the B1G West this very year and would be locked into the playoff right now if they hadn't turned the ball over 3 times against Cincinnati. They have a top-10 recruiting class (for now) for next year and the start of what could be an even better one the year after. "Just join a conference" is easy to say but it really has nothing to do with anything at this point and it certainly wouldn't have changed anything about the first 2 sentences I wrote.

I also cannot believe after the crap we've seen in college football the past decade and especially the past few months that people still think conference affiliation means anything at all. We are closer to a world where Ohio State and USC and Alabama start asking themselves why they're sharing money with the likes of Purdue and Oregon State and Vanderbilt than we are to one where anyone cares about the Big Ten or the Pac-12 or whoever else.

There is not a single season during the CFP era where Notre Dame would benefit from being in the Big Ten West. They may well have lost their spot in 2018 though.

Are you assuming they'd just lose to OSU every year?

Riley was smart to get OUT of the SEC while the getting was good. I don't know why Kelly would want to go INTO the SEC a few years before Oklahoma and Texas show up

Oklahoma in transition and Texas is a mess right now. Those two aren't the SEC teams that would scare any coach away.

Notre Dame's record is a fraud like usual.

Their garbage schedule this year was highlighted by a loss to Cincinnati and wins against Purdue 8-4, Wisconsin 8-4 and Toledo 7-5.

All other teams were .500 or worse.

Had they managed to beat Cincinnati they would have been granted the opportunity to get curb stomped by a real team in the playoff.

I don't know that playing a B10 west schedule would have been much tougher this year. But if they go through that unbeaten and win the champ game, they get to play for a national title. Essentially, each year they just have to beat Iowa, Wisconsin and whichever other teams are decent that year, then win in the title game. Even if they have a loss, they still have a great chance to get into the CFP if they just win the B10 title.

That's a much more straightforward path than they have now.

He could have leveraged the LSU offer into a metric ton of money at ND, and the SEC is only going to get harder, not easier. He had a better chance at the playoffs playing Purdue and Navy every year than having to compete with Bama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Auburn, Florida, etc. to even win the SEC

We're about to change to a system that guarantees ND will get in every time they go 11-1 and gives them a chance at 10-2 if the schedule is good enough. Playoff access is not now and is not going to be an issue.

FWIW, they’re saying here that Kelly had asked for upgrades in facilities at ND and it wasn’t happening, thus he jumps to LSU where money flows like water. Do not underestimate the money from rich LSU trustees that want to beat Saban. I still lean against this being a good fit.

Definitely going to be a culture shock going from Touchdown Jesus to an entire stadium screaming “suck that tiger dick, b*tch” while a song plays.

Random, but fwiw LSU does have my fav college football gif with T-Rex guy

ND claims Kelly didn't ask for anything and that they're constantly looking at facilities upgrades (not that you'd expect them to say anything else, I guess).

Some contract details are out and Kelly is due 90% of his remaining deal if he's fired without cause and 100% of it if he wins a national title and later gets fired. So he's basically guaranteed $90 million right now. Not bad work if you can get it.

I don't really know what that means. Saban coached there, no? He's a proven commodity and as smarmy as any big-time coach. He'll fit right in because he will win. If he can't beat Alabama or to a lessor extent, Georgia, that's what will matter.

The Freeman promotion is now being reported by pretty much everybody.

More interestingly, just about every ND assistant that it was rumored Kelly wanted to poach is reportedly staying.

The games are what matter, but tonight was a pretty feel good night in South Bend.

Yes, but I'm wondering how the players will take to someone who has a reputation for being very disciplined and prickly, as I heard a beat writer say, after years of "player's coaches" who let them do whatever the F they wanted. If it works, LSU could be the next Georgia.

My nephew was a walk-on at Central Michigan Kelly's last year there. Said he was a complete horsefeathers. Good luck with that at LSU. It's a different vibe in Louisiana.

The administration has been delaying renovations to the athletic center for years despite apparently promising Kelly it was going to happen. And Kelly apparently asked for a meeting with the AD and President a few weeks back after LSU first approached him and he declined. Not to say that Kelly isn’t an horsefeathers for doing what he did, but hopefully this was the type of wake up call ND needed to realize that they need to upgrade facilities to compete with the true football factories.

I think it's an excuse. They haven't had much trouble recruiting. At ND all student's get top-level services from what they eat to everything else. I don't know how much has changed in 30 years, but my friends who went there and lived in the dorms had laundry service and they were just regular students. I've never seen a college that is more student-centered than ND.

You’re completely wrong, and random students getting their laundry done 30 years ago has nothing to do with the football team having training facilities on par with other programs that have championship aspirations in 2021. Their recruiting has been solid, but not close to the top programs. That is due to a lot things (including things like academic standards that will never change), but a big part of it is the university’s willingness to consistently invest in the program. For example, today was the first day a Notre Dame assistant coach used a private jet to visit recruits, and schools like Alabama have been doing that for many years. Seems small, but stuff like that adds up when you claim you want your football program to compete with the Alabamas and Clemson’s of the world.

You're full of horsefeathers. What does a private jet have to do with anything? Is the private jet for the recruit or the coach? It's not random students, it's all students. It's not like ND has a gym in a basement with water-filled weights and elastic band resistance machines. Give me a horsefeathering break.

Kelly left for a 100 million reasons and all of them are dollar bills.

Boy did Oklahoma State sure blow that one.

Earlier in the 4th quarter they have 1st and goal from inside the 1. Three runs, they don't get in and kick a FG to go down 5. Then the end of the game they have 1st and goal from the 2 and can't get in on 4 tries.
