Sucks because he looked so good at times toward the end of last season. I know illini fans were expecting great things from him. Seems like a good dude so I hope he finds somewhere good to land and can thrive

Wished he would have stuck it out, if concussion after effects completely clear, we'll see a good player. I hope he does well, I just fear for him that the concussion, vertigo may a permanent issue. Apparently, many think his transferring is a sign they're going to get a commitment from a 5 star, PG Skyy Clark, guess assistant coach Tim Anderson has a strong connection with Clark. I have my doubts, the Illini almost never get the 5 star players they have supposed in roads with, they always end up at places other than Illinois.

Kofi is not coming back, in some respects, I'm glad, the strategy of beating the horsefeathers out of Kofi and his teammates was getting out of hand. By the end of season the months of beatings took their toll on the Illini and certainly was a factor in their inability to make to the second weekend of tournament. Believe we're going to see a faster, more athletic Illini team next season and beyond, no more half court sets pounding the ball into the post. More transition, take the ball to the hoop, think this style plays better in the tournament.

I wish Kofi well, don't believe he has much of chance in today' NBA, be surprised if he's drafted at all. Nevertheless, I hope things work out well for him.

Always been a huge fan of NIL

I think if it helps keep players like Dickenson in college it is cool. He has little chance of NBA success at this point. So if he can get paid to stay as opposed to go to the G League or foreign ball. The college game will get better with more experienced players

Might also slow the exodus of high schoolers going straight to the G-League or overseas. Will be really interesting to see how this plays out over the next 1-3 years. College sports has changed dramatically.

After this whole covid thing, I think it would be cool if the NCAA made the red shirt rule more liberal or just give a 5th yr of eligibility. It obviously is not going to make players stay in school, but let none future pros play another year could make the game better overall.

There are 358 D1 college basketball schools. Not all of them had a full compliment of scholarship players and many of them had more than 13 scholarship players because of the additional COVID year granted by the NCAA. So let’s just assume that it averages out to about 13 players per team. That’s 4,654 players in 2022.

In any given year, about 25% of those players run out of eligibility. It’s probably a bit lower than that, but when you include other forms of attrition (NBA, injuries, disinterest, etc.), let’s keep it at 25%, giving us 3,490 returning players.

The last update I saw put the transfer portal at over 1,500 players. More than 40% of returning players are essentially putting themselves on the free agent market.

Not that I blame them, but I don’t see how this can be sustained. This will basically make it impossible to build a team from year to year. If it doesn’t calm down, the solution will have to be paying the players and then signing them to contracts for a period of seasons, probably with the players unionizing for collective bargaining purposes.

I can't imagine being a coach right now. It's near impossible to effectively recruit when half your roster turns over every year so you don't even know what you positions of need are going to be.

I think this is why eventually the portal will calm down after this initial flurry the last few years. There will be more transfers than before but the more high major players that transfer and end up at a low major school, the more appealing it will be to stay at your school, develop and end up in the rotation like historically has happened. These days it seems like if a highly rated recruit comes in and barely plays their freshman year they will be in the portal as soon as the season ends.

The Illini, to my surprise, ended up signing Skyy Clark along with getting a commitment from his little brother Zachariah "ZZ" Clark, can't remember the last time a recruit such as Skyy Clark has followed through with Illini. Followed through with the Illini staff supposedly having the inside track but, there it is. Illini also got a portal commitment from Terrance Shannon Jr., really like the chances of them finally getting to the second weekend in the near future. Athletic team, RJ, TSJ, Skyy, Hawkins, with a bunch of slashers who can get to the hoop and a sharp shooter in Goode, plays much better in the tournament.

Any Michigan State/Big Ten people have a scouting report on Julius Marble II?

Probably any other year I would have been rather Meh about him trasferring. But MSU if very thin down low now. I dont now the Aggies current situation but Marble will be an okay rotation piece who will score points. However, he is not a good rebounder and looks lost on defense at times. Though he seems athletic enough to be much better at both. I have no numbers to back this up, but my perception was that he looked really good against lessor bigs and very soft against the Kofis and Dickenson types.
