This is either going to be a disaster for the Padres, or a disaster for us if they see something fixable and manage to make him adequate.

Proving once again that in sports, no matter how bad of a coach or player you are, there will always be someone ready to pay you millions

It's a shame the trade deadline isn't 8/31 because we would be more than happy to trade Davies back to them.

Still don't get why nobody wanted Davies. I mean he sucks but Cubs could have given him away for free.

Somebody had to pitch in the second half. It was an either/or situation between Davies and Williams.

That's my guess, anyway.

If you don't care about winning (or if losing is preferred even!) it can't be very hard to find a street free agent who has a major league dream and is willing to take some lumps and a minimum salary to fulfill it.

This year’s version of Davies has basically no appeal to a contender as a deadline add. Does he provide a guaranteed baseline of productivity over anyone pitching at AAA? No. Does he have a greater ceiling than the average AAA call up? Nope. Is the best version of himself someone you want starting a playoff game? No again. Is he useful in short relief if he isn’t needed to start? Also no!

Does Arrieta check any of those boxes?

Yes, several! Also a contender is adding him for free in dollar and player terms, which is not a comparison to questioning why Davies didn't have a deadline trade market.

Getting Arrieta for nothing is nothing like trading for Davies, as you said, but how does Arrieta check several of those boxes? I'll grant you the "greater ceiling" one just for shits and giggles, but, like no. His ceiling is get you 5 innings and still in the game if your guys are hitting well that day. You should be able to call up some guy from the minor to give you the same chance of winning a game. But I guess the Padres don't, so, signing him makes sense.

I would think that a fringe playoff contender who wants to show their fans they did something at the deadline would have considered Davies and his 3.31 ERA in 17 starts prior to the deadline. Yes it was a flukish ERA but it's something. I get the idea that someone has to pitch for the Cubs, but given his lack of future value to the team I would have guessed they would have given him up for as little as a lottery ticket. A team like the Philadelphia, who is in a dogfight for the division and dealing with starting pitcher injuries, should see Davies as an upgrade over Matt Moore and Chase Anderson, no?

Sometimes you think there must be something the fan isn't privy to, that the front office/coaching staff/medical team has some hidden insight into a player that justifies an acquisition and continued use of a player who keeps failing on the field. And other times you're just like, oh they're just as dumb as any of us - this guy is demonstrably done as a player and somehow keeps getting chances.

Everything about Arrieta now bums me out. It would have been better for him to have vanished in a puff of smoke after 2016.

Apparently the Padres overpaid for him anyhow.
