at least kimbrel should be rested for friday.

Heading into the bottom of the 10th you need 2 innings of work, I can accept that the benefit of having a lesser pitcher face the bottom third of the lineup is greater than the odds that the offense puts up more than a singular run in the top of the 11th.

Love being unable to bring in our closer in a bases loaded, 1 out situation because he might possibly have to pitch another inning while the other team throws out Clase and Karinchak after they both pitched yesterday.

Bringing him into the dirty inning, sure, I'm mostly speaking to Thompson getting the 10th at all, since that's where I saw a lot of Twitter consternation

Anyone seen an update on Happ or Hoerner?

Hoerner is for sure back on Friday. Jake threw a bullpen this morning and he will be as well unless he wakes up gimp tomorrow. Happ it sounds like is a few days behind, so probably Monday?

I don’t believe in clutchness but in his Cubs career Heyward has shown a remarkable habit of never getting a hit when it matters

Probably not great that I can easily pick moments he's come through because they stand out that much but 4 quick ones I can think of:

-Walk off single against the Mets earlier this season

-Go ahead 3 run HR off of Hader in the 9th of a game the Cubs were trailing

-Walk off grand slam against the Phillies in 2018

-Game winning single in Jon Lester 1 hitter against the Giants in 2016

Yeah, considering how freaking terrible he has been for pretty much his entire Cubs career, he's come through probably more often than he should have.

4 identified clutch hits in ~ 2,400 PA’s in 5+ years for a premier FA signing. Not bad.

Like I said, it’s probably not a good thing that they easily jump out at me because they were 4 times he’s actually come through. That said there are more big hits and relative to his overall performance I’m not sure if he is particularly unclutch. He just hasn’t been good much of the time so he doesn’t come through all that often, but maybe statistics show otherwise.

I don’t think he has had bad ABs in clutch situations like where he’s trying too hard and swinging at junk. I think he has a tendency to take strikes earlier in the count as he’s trying to work the count in his favor to get a pitch that he won’t roll over (though he often rolls over it anyways).

To me the alarming thing about Heyward is the lack of quality of ABs. For most of his Cubs career I've felt like he's got a plan up there and makes good decisions, his swing is just frequently such a mess that he doesn't make the quality of contact that he should.

But this season? A lot more chase, which means more K's, fewer BBs, and more grounders. Especially frustrating since he actually looked good at the plate last season.

JHey High Leverage OPS/OPS+

16 - .576/60 in 110 PA

17 - .806/117 in 100 PA

18 - .773/115 in 101 PA

19 - .640/71 in 103 PA

20 - .993/163 in 35 PA

21 - .248/-26 in 25 PA

Full Season OPS/OPS+/PA

16 - .631/68/592

17 - .715/84/481

18 - .731/94/489

19 - .772/101/589

20 - .848/133/181

21 - .561/58/122

The high leverage OPS+ is adjusted for situation... so in 17 and 18, he was pretty good in HL situations, and 20 in a very small sample... and nothing has been way out of wack with his overall performance vs HL situations, but yes he has been seriously awful so far this year
