Grossman was the one who got Brett Favre comparisons when he came into the league.

Injuries completely stunted his progress. I don’t know if he ever would have been a great or even good QB, but he played only 8 games in his first three seasons in Chicago. Was the starter on a Super Bowl team his fourth year, when he started all 16 games. Then only played 12 games in his last two years in Chicago.

Not all of those missed games were due to injuries. Dick Jauron inexplicably refused to play him for most the season his rookie year. And then some of the missed time in 07 and 08 could have been benchings. I don’t remember.

He was benched in 07. Orton won the starting job in 08 and Rex didn't come in until Orton got hurt.

Man, I thought he was gonna be horsefeathering good and was so deflated by his injuries in 04 and 05. Was so friggin excited when he came in at halftime on SNF against the Falcons when they benched neckbeard in 05 and the crowd went insane when he made his first long completion to Moose after a half of complete ineptitude by Orton. Didn't even care that his TD on that drive came after a fumbled interception (or however that play went exactly) lol. Then he had the start he had in 06 and I was sure I was right. Oh, well. lol

Same here. I remember being in the bathroom at halftime and hearing the radio talking about Rex throwing on the sidelines and looking like he was coming in. The ovation when he came in was awesome and while as you point out he made mistakes the offense looked like had an entirely new dimension to it with him in there. With Orton, the offense was as conservative and simplified as I've ever seen. Run the ball, grind out a couple of scoring drives a game, throw only when absolutely necessary and never downfield and let your defense win the game. We had games scoring 7, 7, 10, 10, 13, 13, 9 so far that season (and somehow were 3-4 in those games).

So I can understand why fans got hyped up for Rex when he immediately increased the potential of the offense. I think he was promising at the start of 04 too before he got hurt. And then when 2006 starts the Bears put up 34+ points in 4 of the first 7 games. Having never watched a good QB before I definitely bit hard into the Rex Grossman hype, not knowing any better.

Some more positive feedback about Fields today, including from Dolphins beat guys:

https://www.sportsmockery.com/chicago-bears/justin-fields-shined-bright-in-first-bears-dolphins-joint-practice/

the writer for that article calls it "Soldier Fields". ughh... I wonder how he pronounces "IllinoiS"

Probably just a mistake from typing Justin "Fields" so much.

Yeah, some people have been making that pun (that it should/will be called "Soldier Fields" but the way he used it there looks like it just might've been a typo/mistake from the repetition.

These reports seem to get better by the day.

This was still a joint practice with the Dolphins right? Carving up an opposing D like that even if its behind closed doors in a practice is awesome to hear.

also, lmao

I'm still in awe that MY team more or less fell as backwards into a talent like Fields and it didn't involve some horrific tank job, but just general NFL incompetence and having the right trigger happy NFL GM at the helm to be aggressive for it.

It really is amazing. It sounds like Lance is impressing in camp but reviews on Wilson have been mixed, to say the least. I will never not be shocked he fell to the Bears.

I keep looking for reasons to be cautious with Fields but he really does seem like the total package. Thank you Aaron Rodgers for being a distraction that day.

I mean even if Lance ends up being awesome it will be hilarious how much they gave up to do it when they could have stood pat and probably ended up with one of the two. Or traded up much less.

It's nuts, I remember when the Bears had that big losing streak during the season thinking how mad I was at the flukish 5-1 start preventing us from finishing with a top 2 pick which is the only way to get Lawrence or Fields. Those top 2 were pretty locked in through the season. How he somehow dropped to 11 is beyond my comprehension

I think the we can thank Dwayne Haskins and unconscious bias
