losing len hurt me more than any chicago athlete leaving ever has. i guess we all just assumed that he would be here for a very long time.

when was the last time the Cubs lost or any other Chicago team lost a real stud in their prime? I was really bothered when the Cubs lost Maddux. I wasnt shocked because everyone knew it was coming. It still bothers me that the Cubs screwed up so bad with a HoFer and then have the audacity to retire his number. I think the thing with Len is the shock of it. You always get the sense that relationships are ending no matter what level they are on. This completely floored me.

wait you were mad that the cubs retired maddux's number?

who tf cares?

Seriously. They brought him back at the end, and then let him pretend to be a sound guy and throw curveballs at Kris.

Sosa was old and getting bad, but the team's treatment of him was(and still is) really gross.

this is probably my answer as to who i was saddest about when and how they left. i haven't thought real hard about it, though.

I wish I could like this 10 times. eta: Sammy was actually still pretty decent at the end of his Cubs time though. He was an above average regular in both 2003 and 2004, and I will make the excuse for him that he was trying to mentally rebound from a devastating hit by pitch during that time, which at least from my memory made him stand a mile away from the plate for a while.

I was born in the early 90s, with a massive White Sox fan grandfather and a super cool dad who liked both teams, but prefered the Sox at the time. Despite their persistent efforts, Slammin' Sammy was just way more convincing to a 7-year-old.

The Cubs owe my fandom to Sammy, and I would be willing to bet that's case for countless Cubs fans around my age. The disrespect and self-righteousness of the Ricketts' family in their approach to Sammy is simply insulting. They are about as petty and pathetic as you can be, saying Sammy literally *owes* them an apology for not being forward about his steroid usage. That's not even why the braindead Cubs fans wanted an apology from him.

So, like, did they hear one time in passing that there was a segment of the Cubs fan base that was super mad at Sammy, assume it was for steroids, and run with it? Is there even a good business argument for Sammy's exile? It just feels like a rich piece of horsefeathers trying to teach us all we can't have too many fun things in life.

Goes without saying, but the Cubs are so horsefeathering Trumpy.

Suck my dick, Cubs.

obviously jordan was the biggest, but len leaving has bummed me out in a unique way. he had become such a comforting voice to me. losing him feels like more than just baseball loss. i know it's stupid.

yeah, i was pretty shocked and initially very bummed about it. i'll take len at his word that this is a fulfillment of a long time dream for him.

as long as it's not freaking chris myers, i'm ok with it. i'm guessing it'll be randazzo. of the names we've heard, he seems most likely/realistic, and he'd be fine.

this is now where i'm at. I was really bummed (and shocked, of course) at first. But, if they hire a decent (or dare I say good?) replacement and it's not someone like Myers then I'll be fine. Still sucks but maybe the new guy will be likeable and I feel like JD can vibe with a number of personalities.

I just really don't want them to horsefeathers up this hire because I've got my doubts the team will be all that special in 2021.

ETA: and if the PBP is a likeable person good at his job and JD likes him and keeps a good dynamic that can go a long way in a 3 hour long ballgame for a team that clearly isn't going go out of their way to spend any money on the actual product. i'll take my small victories where and when I can.

Am I the only one that finds JD annoying? I liked him when he first got to Chicago but the last few years he's been close to unbearable to me especially when it comes to whining about the strike zone.
