You got an extra $7 million laying around, because PTR doesn't.

Lol, that aged well.

Cubs 2021 offseason wish list:

- Players that were good in 2011

- Players that were born in 2011

I wonder if they have checked in on Zambrano and Colon.

I think it’s more like they’re wondering whether Rick Reuschel or Rueben Quevado still have it.....

Bringing in Shark and Arrieta to do their try-hard, 'I expect some more effort around here' charade while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits (half of which won't be their fault) and 3 walks in 4 innings is about the best way to make me less excited about this team. But hey, at least then Ricketts will be able to set up a couple 'get your photo taken with a Cub' booths at his fundraisers.

Joc at 7, Romine at 1.5 and the two relievers, the Theo leaving windfall has just about dried up

How likely is it Tom played $GME this week?

Personally, this reads to me as a Kaplan "cover my ass" move. Or he's very liberally playing with the word "recently." The Cubs clearly aren't spending a ton, and given that reality they were likely always going to wait until A) after the Arb deadline and B) for some of the top tier of FA to sign so they could start seriously engaging with the middle tier.

It makes sense but I feel like if this was in any sort of consideration as a plan why would they let guys like Lester, Chatwood, Q go for basically nothing? Lester is not that great anymore but when you are looking at guys like Samardzija and Shelby Miller as rotation pieces, and Lester would have come back for very very little and much of that deferred...seems like an odd move IMO.

The Tribune had a habit of making a splash just before tickets went on sale in February and this smells like Tom's version. It's pretty ridiculous but so on brand that Kaplan specifically says Tom Ricketts increased payroll, not the Cubs, or ownership, or the board, but specifically Tom has gifted us this wonderful thing.

They took a slap in the face on season ticket renewals and this is probably part of the response to that situation.

It's also a goofy trick to reduce your payroll from 180 to 120 then say we'll increase it to 150 (or whatever the details are), when the end result if you're still cutting payroll.

Purely for on-field considerations, I personally wouldn't have wanted Lester back even at the league minimum. Someone like Shelby Miller you can kick his ass to the curb if he has three bad starts in a row. You can't do that to folk hero Jon Lester.

Basically, my guess is there is/was something like $20-30M available post Darvish trade. That's enough to do some work, but not a lot. And so the plan is to take an approach to the rotation similar to what they've taken with the bullpen the last few years, and then use what little money you have on locking in actual quality in the OF and at 2B once prices started coming down.

Kaplan has been pounding the "they have zero money" drum. So now that they're going to spend some money, that 4'3" little skeez has gotta pretend that what happened is that circumstances changed and not that he's just clueless.

I'd really like to gamble on Folty. There was never a reason given to why he was so emaciated last year. If he has himself together now physically and his velocity is back up in the 94 range he could be a good #2-3 type.

I said something similar elsewhere but it sure would've been nice if Tom had been this generous before they traded away a top 10 pitcher.

Yeah but Todd Wellemeyer might!

Also everyone is upset about Jon Lester leaving but I bet the OG Jon Leicester is just sitting at home waiting for a call.

The local guys are now saying the Cubs are going to add two more starters. And over the last week we've seen them connected to Folty/Archer/Rodon as well as Shark and Jake. I'm guessing the plan is one of each "type"?

Given that Alzolay and Mills have been talked up as shoe-ins for the rotation, that would seem to imply we're going with a 6 man? For example:

Hendricks

Jake

Davies

Rodon

Mills

Alzolay

I kind of wonder if the rest of the offseason is going to be two starters and Wong coming in, with Willson heading out.
