In all seriousness, why are you allowing guys not coming to the Cubs upset you?

It doesn’t upset me, just thought he was a nice target. Especially for $1.1 million. I expect us to at least be in on guys at that level.

they're not hiring a GM because they can't afford one, they aren't signing actual baseball players.

they're not hiring a GM because they can't afford one, they aren't signing actual baseball players.

I’m 50/50 at best the GM thing is a money saving/can’t afford thing vs actually doing a thorough process of picking the next GM. But regardless.

I don't believe for a minute that dominic smith is available. At least not for 1 season of Bryant. He has put up a .957 OPS over the last 2 seasons, good for a 149 wRC+ and 390 wOBA.

I don't believe for a minute that dominic smith is available. At least not for 1 season of Bryant. He has put up a .957 OPS over the last 2 seasons, good for a 149 wRC+ and 390 wOBA.

I believe he’d be available for KB. He can’t play defense and there’s no NL DH this year and they have Alonso. Idk why we’d be interested in him since he’s a fringe 1B at best and there’s no certainty a DH is coming to the NL for good anytime soon.

Rizzo isn’t getting $20 mil AAV and Smith is borderline unplayable defensively if he isn’t OPS’ing close to 1.000. And I think we extend Rizzo anyways so Smith doesn’t really fit. I’d rather target a different return for KB with the Mets or someone else.

I'm not sure I believe this but let me play devil's advocate. You essentially have 3 risks here:

 

- The risk that Smith isn't even functional at 1B/LF plus the risk that the DH doesn't come to the NL. UZR seems to not despise Smith at 1B, for as much as we can trust 1B UZR.

 

- The risk that a different return for Bryant is too far away or too low ceiling thanks to his minimal team control, inconsistent production, and most importantly, 20 million contract in a year where that is a poison pill.

 

- The risk that Bryant does not return to form and/or does not re-sign with the Cubs.

 

 

I can see a set of circumstances where Hoyer and co believe that 2020 Smith is at least close to the real article and that he could be a longer term Rizzo replacement, and that the current version of Bryant + pandemic finances mean that's by far the most production/upside he's going to get in trade, and that they're pessimistic about Bryant's long term future(productivity, contract, or both).

 

This also assumes that Rizzo is not getting extended, which is maybe me wishfully projecting my hopes onto the situation(unless he's taking very short years and/or a fairly extensive pay cut).

I don't typically trust randos, but randos rarely commit to such specific timelines for things unprompted. I'd guess, given the rumors the past week or so, he's expecting Willson or KB to go somewhere?

Yeah one of those two would be my guess. He’s popped up before and broken stuff, think he was very early on Yu or Kimbrel signing and has broken other moves. He’s loosely affiliated with Barstool, iirc, and they have guys who know and talk to people.

Yeah, that sounds to me like he heard a Cubs deal is going down but got no details yet still wants some level of credit.

The Angels could probably use both. I'd like to think we could get some mlb ready pieces in return but I'm ready to be underwhelmed again. Given the timing and fairly immediate nature of the rumors for KB and Willson, it is starting to feel to me like they're going to the same team.

Angels get: Bryant, Contreras, Kimbrel, Bote

Cubs get: Canning, Upton, David Fletcher, Taylor Ward, Jordyn Adams, Hector Yan, David Calabrese, Kevin Maitan

 

Idk, I'm bored, everything sucks, this is probably a terrible trade.
