These guys can go ahead and just self quarantine for the rest of the year. I mean most of them pretty much are already performancewise

The most interesting thing about these stretches of incompetence is that you can almost tell if they don't score for like 2 innings then they're not scoring the rest of the game

all they had to do was win 2 of 5 and they just can't do it

1 more chance tomorrow!

at least it looks like they're going to blow it soon so we can stop paying attention in a week or 2

They’re going to make to the playoffs so we’re gonna be stuck paying attention for at least ~4 more weeks.

i honestly don't care at all about the playoffs. first of all, we all know they aren't going to win. and even if they do, they'll have done it while going 31-29 or some horsefeathers, and it will never mean anything. the only thing they could have done this year that would have actually meant something to me would have been to buck all the stupid trends and play good baseball for 60 games. i didn't have any real hope for this until the stupid 13-3 start tricked me into thinking things were different.

The rest of the NL sucks/is average, get lucky and hope someone bounces the Dodgers early and we have a shot. They very likely lose round 1 or 2 but whatever. This is a weird season, but they still will be playing playoff baseball and that’s exciting enough for me whatever the format and regular season record.

if they weren't going to win the division of the real wild card, then i don't even want them in. i can already see 2 months from now when tom and theo are talking about how they made the playoffs, and that most moves will be complimentary this offseason.

People are complimenting the Cardinals for how well they’ve done with all the double headers compared to the 2018 Cubs death march...

The Cubs during that 2018 stretch - 24-16

The Cardinals during their post-COVID stretch - 15-12

Now the Cubs did start that stretch 7-1 until the weight of that stretch started to maybe affect them, but even then their record was 17-15.

The reason that stretch seemed so damn arduous is because the Brewers went 26-10 during that same period

did the cubs have a bunch of doubleheaders in that stretch? i always thought people overstated what the cubs had to go through at the end of that season. they played a bunch of days in a row, big whoop

Not many doubleheaders. I think it was 45 games in 44 days or something? Or maybe even the other way around.

I think they had at least 2 DHs (I remember one vs the Nats and Cardinals). It was a pretty unprecedented stretch (wasn’t it like 42 games in 40 days?). They did really well, the Brewers just played .800 or whatever and we only played like .600 which gets the job done most of the time and if the Brewers win 1 less game I think we’d think of the Cubs pulling that stretch off to win 95 and the division much differently and a big accomplishment. It also came on the heels of the end of the season where they had already played ~120 games then had to go on the death march.

it's crazy how many times over the last 3 seasons i've thought "alright, they won the first game of the series. just win one more, and the ____ are pretty much done", only for the cubs to lose all the remaining games and let the other team right back into it.

Other than 2018 when did this happen? 2017 they held on, last year they just sucked and this year they’re at least still in first and can go back up 2.5.

you don't remember them blowing the wild card to the brewers last year? i remember there were a couple series in september where the cubs won the first one to go up like 4-5 games, only to lose the next 2/3 each time.

Yup. Padres are legit now too, though still way worse than the Dodgers. Every other contender is in the same boat as us or worse. The Braves rotation is basically Fried and pray for rain. The Phillies' rotation is similar to ours but the bullpen is still trash even post reinforcements. The Mets have been ravaged by injuries and opt-outs. We know what's wrong with all the Central teams. No reason to pack it in, when for as historically great as the Dodgers are it's still fairly likely they get crapshooted before we would even face them

I am pretty pessimistic about going for it next year, but that's obviously a thing you don't worry about 'til November.
