Geez, he's been pretty terrible this year but fairly reliable arm the prior 3 seasons

Love this though:

Too bad there are no LOOGYS anymore

His FIP is below 4, so fine, but the walk rate seems uncomfortably high in a bullpen that already features too much of that.

Given how little season is left getting a guy on the IL is worrisome, who knows if there's enough time to get him back and right. But Chafin is basically the ideal lefty setup man: murder on lefties and still pretty good against righties.

Yeah he’s basically free. I have no issue doing this and hopefully he gets back and is right, if he is he’s a definite upgrade. The issue is there’s only “a couple weeks” left anyways. Hopefully they make another move or two.

I mean honestly, he just needs to be healthy for the playoffs. Cubs are at 97% playoff odds per Fangraphs and while winning the division is nice, with the NL mostly mediocre and the playoffs likely to be played in a bubble (so no HFA), the only thing I'd be concerned about is avoiding the Dodgers. But even then it might not be bad to take your shot at the Dodgers in a 3 game series vs maybe having to play them in a 7 game NLCS.

But yeah the fact that theres at least some tiny bit of doubt he may not be back before the playoffs, its certainly a concern.

Yeah, I'm basically worried about a Pedro Strip situation, where he gets back like a week before the playoffs, gets two shaky outings in, and then we have to wonder if he's a guy that we can lean on yet.

Like CW11 said though he's basically free if he doesn't come back, so I wonder if they get Osich on top of Chafin.

do you and UM realize you're talking about a sample of 6 innings?

I can't speak for UM but I wasn't just referring to this year re: walk rate.

This is what happens: I see the Cubs trade for a reliever i only know at a very high level, I post the thread about it then go look up their stats and then dont think about things like sample size until later

The Diamondbacks and Cubs have completed the pre-trade deadline deal that sent left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin to Chicago for a player to be named later. The D-backs have acquired infielder Ronny Simon for Chafin, Arizona announced.

Still just 20 years old, the switch-hitting Simon tore the cover off the ball at the rookie level in 2019. Simon amassed 196 plate appearances then and batted .333/.411/.571 (164 wRC+) with three home runs, 14 stolen bases and almost as many walks (21) as strikeouts (25) over 196 plate appearances. Based on what he has done in the minors, Simon seems like a nice get for Arizona.
