Four people who were with the Astros in 2017, including pitcher Mike Fiers, said that during that season, the Astros stole signs during home games in real time with the aid of a camera positioned in the outfield.

Now, an MLB investigation into the Astros’ culture in the wake of the team’s firing of assistant general manager Brandon Taubman could be expanded to determine who in the organization was aware of the sign-stealing practice — and whether it continued or evolved in subsequent seasons. The Athletic’s confirmation of rule-breaking by Houston is limited to 2017.

Sterns came from the Astros, Yelich had ridiculous home/road splits last year, on top of their general BS. When other teams are mentioned as doing similar things to cheat I just assume it’s the Brewers.

Boy, I sure hope the Cubs don't hire any of those dirty cheaters who are really good at cheating. No sir!

I wish we cheated more, there’s clearly little to no repercussions. It really wouldn’t shock me if we don’t attempt to do anything other than the “traditional” or “acceptable” in game stuff (like runner on 2B, picking up on pitch tipping, etc.). Since I’m under that presumption I’m going to bastardized any form of cheating by these immoral teams.

Fiers 4th to last start of the year was in Houston, he went 1IP 9H 9ER 5HR 1K. Wonder if that finally made him crack to spill the beans on the cheating.

This has been well-known inside baseball. They also use cameras/advanced tech to figure out how a pitcher might be tipping their pitches.

I'm surprised former players are admitting it now. I don't know if MLB can retroactively punish the Astros for this because I'm not sure if electronic sign-stealing was prohibited in 2017? I hope they get punished for this.

Again, just like with human umps and an automated strike zone, there exists a technical solution. Have the pitcher and catcher wear an ear piece and have it called in on an encrypted signal. That should solve the problem.

.

I’m sure they can punish them now, but it’s too hard to do anything about the results of the 2017 season (if that’s what you are asking). For example, what if the Dodgers were doing something too? They sure aren’t going to admit it.

That’s too speculative. But more to your point of the results of the 2017 season, if you’re giving reasons why not to hand the championship to the dodgers, the main reason is that there’s every chance the Yankees would have beaten the dodgers, or the other team the astros cheated, the Red Sox. Or did they cheat their way into the playoffs. How far do you go back? Did their mamas cheat on their daddies? We just don’t know.

Reports of banging on garbage cans and whistles coming from the dugout. How can the umps not hear that?

They can. But there's no rules against it. What are the umps supposed to do?

Let's face it: it's mostly "cheating" as opposed to actual cheating, since the not really-rules are hinged on old-timey nonsense that treats cameras like sorcery that will steal someone's soul.

VALID THEORY. Thats exactly what happened to Lou Piniella. .

No setting up a system with cameras in your home park so you can instantly relay signs to a hitter is capital C cheating. I'm not even sure there's a huge benefit(lots of hitters have said they don't even want that information), but when you're systematically getting it in a way that isn't possible for the opponent to do so because it's your home park, it's cheating.

Nah. It's dumb for catchers and pitchers to still communicate that way 20 [expletive] years deep into the 21st Century. At worst it's motivation for the game to update something that should have been updated god knows how many years ago. It's such a ridiculous blind spot it basically deserves to be exploited (and visiting teams can exploit pretty damn easily, too).

Hit like to subscribe and get my follow up theory: A [expletive] pitch clock would pretty much fix all of this.
